Nats Beat Giants, Defensive Woes Continue

by Uncategorized

bard.jpgThe Washington Nationals won.  That’s right.  They won.

Despite 2 more defensive errors, one of which, a throwing error by C Josh Bard, cost 2 runs, the Nationals offensive fire power awakened to power the Nationals to a 10-6 win over the Giants.

Craig Stammen pitched 6 innings allowing 7 hits and 5 runs, 4 of which were earned, left without a decision.  Instead, it was the Nationals bullpen, mainly Ron Villone, that kept the Nationals alive.  Villone tossed 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out 2, to improve to 3-0 and keep his 0.00 ERA in tact.  Villon has now pitched in 14.2 scoreless innings and looks pretty strong on the mound.  Perhaps a closer candidate?

Josh Bard homered and went 3 for 4, while Anderson Hernandez also added 3 hits.  Washington was powered by a 6 run 8th inning.  With two on, Alberto Gonzales pinched hit for Villone and singled in Will Nieves, who ran for Bard.  Christian Guzman singled in Hernandez for the 2nd run of the inning. Two batter later, Ryan Zimmerman doubled in Gonzales and Guzman or runs 3 and 4. Zimmy is now tied for 10th in the National League with 37 RBIs.  Elijah Dukes followed with another double and a run in, and Will Nieves end the 6 run rally with a sacrifice RBI fly out.

It was a good win for the Nats, starting off a 9 game home stand.  Tonight Jordan Zimmerman takes the mound against the Giants.  Zimmerman is one of the top prospects int he system,  but has struggled recently, posting an ERA over 6.00.  Zimmerman needs a solid, quality start tonight, especially with the impressive pitching being done in Syracuse (AAA) by Colin Balestar.

Taking a look at the system results …

Syracuse (AAA) won its third straight, defeating Scranton/Wilkes
Barre 3-2 last night.  JD Martin made another impressive start,
pitching 6 .2 innings and allowing 1 earned run.  Martin improved to
5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.74 in 9 starts with Syracuse.  Keep your
eye on Martin.  Recently demoted Logan Kensing picked up his 3rd save,
pitching a scoreless 9th.  Brad Eldred and Mike Vento hit home runs,
both on consecutive nights, to power the Chiefs offense.  Jorge Padilla
was also 2-4, raising his average to .385.

Harrisburg (AA) shutout New Hampshire 3-0 behind impressive
pitching from Corey Van Allen, who needed it after shaky starts this
season.  Van Allen threw 6 shut out innings, allowing 4 hits.  Van
Allen gained his first win and is 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA.  Josh Wilkie and
Jack Spradlin preserved the shutout.  Edgar Baez was 2 for 4 and
tripled in two runs for the Senators.

Potomac (A) defeated Salem in a 9-8 slugfest.  Tom Milone
allowed 3 runs in 5 innings.  Chris Rivera picked up the win out of the
bullpen, throwing two late scoreless innings.  The Nationals battered
Salem ptiching for 13 hits.   Boomer Whiting contineus to swing a hot
bat, going 3 for 5  and scoring twice.  Danny Espinosa likewise is just
as hot, smacking two doubles and going 2 for 6.Espinosa has a 4 game
hitting streak, all 4 are multi-hit games.  He is hitting .351 over his
last 10 games.  Sean Rooney also added 3 hits.

Hagerstown (A) was the only loser in the system last night,
falling 6-3 to Hickory.   Jack McGeary pitched 5 innings, allowing 2
runs on 4 strikeouts.  He continues to stuggle with control though,
adding 4 more walks to his 33 walks in 41 innings.   Justin Phillabaum
got hammered for 4 runs to take the loss.  Derek Norris was 2 for 4,
hit homer number 12 and drove in 2 runs for the Suns.  Norris is
batting .329.
