Detwiler called to Washington, Olson Injured

rossd.jpg2007 first round draft pick Ross Detwiler has been recalled to the Washington Nationals and will make his major league debut on Monday, a double header against Pittsburgh.  Detwiler has struggled at times last year at Potomac (A) finishing the season with an 8-8 record and an ERA of 4.86.  He brings a nasty fast ball and struck out 114 in 124 innings last year.

This season has been different for Detwiler.  This season, he looks like the pitcher the Nationals planned on getting when they drafted him 6th overall.  He is 0-3, but has posted a 2.96 ERA, getting little run support form an anemic Harrisburg (AA) offense.   In 6 starts, Detwiler has thrown 26 innings and recorded 28 strikeouts.

The Nationals scratched Detwiler from his minor league start, and plan
to recall the left-hander for a spot start in the big leagues on
Monday, two sources said. Detwiler has had an up-and-down career since
being drafted sixth overall two years ago, but this year, in six starts
for the Class AA Senators, Detwiler is 0-3 with a 2.96 ERA. Only once has he allowed more than two earned runs.

Detwiler is already listed on the Nats 40 man roster, making it easier to recall him.

Meanwhile, of course, the Nationals dropped the first of a double header to the Phillies 8-5.  Scott Olson got roughed up for 9 hits, 5 runs in 5 innings.  Post game, Olson had an MRI done on his shoulder and appears to be headed to the disabled list.  A good start on Monday by Detwiler could see a extended stay.

Ryan Zimmerman went 2 for 4 with a run, 2 RBIs and homer number 9.  Josh Willingham hit his 6th homer in the losing Nats bid.

Game 2 of the double header is in a rain delay and as EXPECTED, the Nats are losing because Daniel Cabrera is on the mound.  When, oh when are the Nats going to make a change and get Cabrera out of the rotation.  Nats are losing 7-5, Cabrera gain yielded 7 runs and 8 hits in just 5 innings.  He ERA jumped to 5.95.  Come on Mike Rizzo, do something right for once and can Cabrera.
