DCPSR Dialogue: By now, you have heard about the message board perceived threat made against Alexander Ovechkin on a Pittsburgh Penguin fan forum. The threat was apparently made after the game on Monday by a 17 year old from Chambersburg, PA. That’s the town I was born and raised in, and a town I live literally 10 to 15 minutes from. Don’t likely know the kid, maybe someone in his family, who knows, but really it doesn’t matter.
As a parent of two kids being raised in this high tech, internet based Era, this is something that is really not surprising. The Internet is not the same it was, say, 15 years ago. Everything can be found by search engines, search spiders, etc . . . Blogs are no longer private, even if meant to be between you and your friends. Forum threads are tagged, have topic words, and forums are searchable by Internet portals and spiders. Try it. Think of a subject. Type in for instance “NFL mocks” and see how many search results come up with forum threads. Tons of forum threads, I know, because we search.
The lesson — people simply don’t realize that what they type online is NOT private, seen by thousands you may not even think would see it. We here at DC Pro Sports Report used to be affiliated with a Redskins site that had at one time active forums, not really that active anymore, so check out theWarpath.net instead if you ant active Redskins talk. At times it was difficult to monitor because users, whether they were adults, teenagers, or youngsters, just could not grasp the concept that what they typed was not private, to just members of the board, but accessible to non-member guests, search portals and m
The posted thread, and I have not seen it, was likely some puffing,
acting like a big shot, heat of the moment stupidity, all wrapped into
one typed line. A line that landed the Pennsylvania State Police on
his doorstep, three days later. Granted, we fully understand that
teenagers roll their eyes and don’t listen to any advice given, but we
urge our readers to have that conversation with your kids, jut to let
them know, if you think what won’t be seen by others, won’t be read by
anyone besides members, etc…it just isn’t true. It is seen by way
more than you can imagine. Just ask the 17 year old kid from
Chambersburg, PA.
Onward we go …
We already ran our opinion on the George McPhee comments
regarding officiating. It has been poor and there were plenty of picky
calls on the Caps on Wednesday, yet uncalled calls on Pittsburgh. Not
an excuse for the loss, the Caps lost that one on their own by a crappy
performance, but come on NHL, time to step up and call fair games.
Good article by the Wash Post on the similar career paths of Caps HC Bruce Boudreau and Pittsburgh’s new coach Dan Bylsma.
DC Sports Bog writes
on back to back games starting tonight and then tomorrow night. As
harda s these games are played between the Caps and Pens, it will be
interesting to see how it is all balanced out, on both sides. The Caps
biggie with that too is the fact that Simeon Varlamov will more than
likely play both games. He hasn’t done that in the NHL yet.
Pittsburgh clearly has the momentum,
not only because they won the game, 3-2 and pulled the series to 2-1,
but because of the way they played. They out skated, out hustled, out
passed, out shot, and out hit the Caps. Pure and simple. Don Daly writes on the back to backer as well.
Remember when the Caps were down 2-0 to the Rangers, that third game,
in which the Caps came out brutal, hitting, serious, and on their
game. That is the Caps performance we need to see tonight. It is time
this team raises the intensity. This kind of game play where they come
out flat for the first two periods, won’t work against a high quality
team like the Pens. It simply won’t work. The Caps are a big team.
They can hit. They are gifted in many aspects, as far as shooting and
passing. They need to execute. They need to be passionate. Aboce and
beyond all, these Caps need to learn to play THREE PERIODS of hockey.
Bruce Boudreau is right, the Caps are still leading 2-1.
The Caps are still in good position. I don’t think anyone real hockey
fan out there expected the Caps to sweep the Pens. The Pens are too
good to be swept. Caps still have 3 of the last 4 games at the Verizon
Center. They are in good position. BUT, they must oplay three periods
of Caps hockey, with intensity and passion.
And the Hershey Bears are up tonight
as well, playing in WB/Scranton against the baby Pens. Bears, like
their parent club, took a 2-0 series lead and now sit at 2-1. Both the
Caps and Bears are looking to put the vice tighter and go up 3-1
tonight. Ok, so not only are the Caps and Pen minor affiliates playing
in the second round, like the Caps and Pens, not only did the Bears,
like the Caps, go up 2-0, not only did the baby Pens storm back and
pull the series to 2-1 on the same night the Pens beat the Caps to move
that series to 2-1, but, even more eerie in similarity, the Bears and
baby Pens play back to back tonight and Saturday, just like the Caps
and Pens. Wierd.
Just to keep you up to date on the state of the Phoenix franchise, Jim
Balsillie is involved again, attempting to get the Coyotes to Hamilton,
Canada. SportsNet.ca, Canoe.com, Spector . Good article from Hockey Analysis.
The article is correct. At some point, Gary Bettman and the NHL is
going to have to address Balsillie. he has the money, the desire, and
Hamilton wants a team. Can it be much worse than Phoenix? Doubtful,
it’s Canada.
