The Nats got rained out, the Caps play tonight in game 2 of their playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Skins held minicamp. But first, our top story.
TOP STORY
The top story today is the aftermath of the Redskins minicamp. Players who need to get their perpetually-injured bodies on the field could not do so and the guy management loves to hate looks better than ever. The Skins looked desperate in bringing well over 100 players to minicamp, including wideouts and offensive linemen the rest of the league has seemingly given up on. The team is now in the unenviable position of needing to find a few real players amidst that sea of castoffs. Time for Jim Zorn to over-compensate for the mistakes of his GM.
CAPITALS
1. Goalie
Simeon VarLAmov is a recognizable star these days.
Read it.
2. USA Today has noticed VarLAmov.
Read it.
3. The Caps managed to win game 7 against the Rangers and game 1 against the Penguins despite starting poorly. They know that can’t last so they’re determined to end the poor starts and dominate from the dropping of the puck.
Read it.
4. If you missed it over the weekend, this Mike Wise story on
Donald Brashear is a must-read. So
read it.
5. A preview of game 2, which happens tonight at the Phone Booth.
Read it.
6. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make. For Caps GM
George McPhee, not trading VarLAmov was a pretty damn good move.

7. The 2009 playoffs are a role reversal for Jose Theodore. TS.
Read it.
NATIONALS
1. Former Nationals GM
Jim Bowden didn’t pay much attention to upgrading the bullpen during this past offseason and the team is already paying for it. That won’t stop any time soon.
Read it.
2. The series finale between the Nats and the Cardinals was postponed due to rain and finding a date to make it up won’t be easy. That was the only scheduled trip for the Cardinals to DC this season.
Read it.
3. OF Lastings Milledge lasted all of 7 games this season before the Nats sent him down to the minors to see if playing against inferior competition would help him look more like a real pro baseball player. It’s still a work in progress.
Read it.
REDSKINS
1. The desperation was evident at this weekend’s Redskins minicamp.
Read it.
2. It was a rainy and wet minicamp for the Redskins, but
Jim Zorn thinks this one went a lot better than his first minicamp last year.
Read it.
3. He’s still QB #3 on the depth chart, but
Colt Brennan feels confident about his stronger arm and his chances to unseat backup
Todd Collins.
Read it.
4. Skins management has spent the entire offseason publicly insulting their starting quarterback, but
Jason Campbell thinks he’s poised for a big year. Look, Jason, I have been a defender of yours for a long time and think you’ll make a fine quarterback in this league, but before you go predicting big things this season, take a look at your offensive line.
Read it.
5. Here is a rundown of the highs and lows of the minicamp. Short version: Jason Campbell and
Albert Haynesworth looked good while sophomore wideouts
Devin Thomas and
Malcolm Kelly are STILL too injured to even practice in non-contact drills.
Read it.
6. Free agent wideouts
DJ Hackett and
Kelley Washington made a good impression this past weekend, but neither has agreed to a contract.
Read it.
| 1 |
Brian Orakpo is likely to get plenty of reps at linebacker. |
| 2 |
Right tackle and wide receiver were as unsettled as most thought, with veterans being offered contracts after tryouts. |
| 3 |
Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly still can’t get onto, or stay on, the field (but maybe by June). |
| 4 |
It’s difficult for a 410-pound man not to stand out, even among 100 pro football players. |
| 5 |
With no Brett Favre sightings at Dulles, Jason Campbell could finally exhale, at least a little. |
