The Redskins are clearly desperate for wide receivers and offensive linemen — and no wonder. Look at what they’ve got at those positions now. The Redskins have obviously looked at it, too, which explains why the team just signed WR Trent Shelton, an undrafted player from Baylor who learned the West Coast offense on the 2008 Seattle Seahawks practice squad. Of course, considering that the Seahawks were destroyed by injuries at that position and Shelton still couldn’t get on the field…Well, I don’t think I need to finish that sentence. The Skins brought DJ Hackett and Kelley Washington in to minicamp, but neither has signed a deal with the team.
You’ve probably never heard of Jeremy Bridges, a free agent offensive lineman. Get used to the name because the Redskins signed him to a contract. With Jon Jansen and Stephon Heyer the other options at right tackle, Bridges actually has a decent chance to get a starting job at that position.
DE Renaldo Wynn, a 34-year-old who was cut by the Redskins a couple of years ago is back because the Redskins are — once again — desperate. Apparently, Wynn has lost about 25 pounds of weight [to about 270 lbs] and is in his best shape in years. Spending time with the NY Giants convinced him to lose weight to get faster and quicker. Will it help him on the field this season? We’ll see. He was heavier before because teams moved him inside and out, but now he’ll be expected to play outside only, battling fellow geriatric Phillip Daniels for the DRE spot.
While we’re on the subject of desperation — which we probably will be for much, if not all of the coming season — the Redskins have signed OT Mike Williams, a 2002 4th overall pick from the University of Texas. You knew that. Williams was a teammate of OG Derrick Dockery at Texas and Dockery, you also know, returned to the Redskins after several mediocre season in Buffalo after the Bills gave him a hilarious contract. Not surprisingly, it was the Dockery connection that brought Williams and the Redskins together. Williams and his wife moved in with Dockery and his wife during the pregnancy of Dockery’s wife. [What, couldn't afford a nanny?] So, the long and short of it is: Dockery knocking up his wife is what loosed the bloated man-beast that is Mike Williams upon the Redskins. In case you were wondering why I called Williams a bloated man-beast, let me remind you that he didn’t take part in the minicamp because he currently weighs over 400 pounds.
First round pick Brian Orakpo began working at SLB at minicamp and linebackers coach Kirk Olivadatti liked what he saw. Also, Jon Jansen is now working out at guard and center. Considering Jansen isn’t even good at right tackle these days — the position he’s played for his entire adult life — this tells you all you need to know about the depth the Redskins have, or don’t have, on the offensive line.
