We submitted 8 questions to Penguins Experience, a MVN partner, to bring you information about the Pittsburgh Penguins, some Penguin fan insight, and for your opposition research.   We thank Rick for his thoughtful responses and participation and we encourage our readers to seek your Penguins insight and news at Penguins Experience.  As an MVN site, we look forward to working closely with our MVN partners in the coming NFL season and NHL and NBA season enext year.

newpenguinsexperiencejerseybannerlong.jpgDCPSR:   Who do you think will win this series, and why?

Penguins Experience:  The Penguins.  They have the experience of being there before.  This is
the first time the Capitals have moved past the first round in over a
decade.  The Penguins came within two wins of the Stanley Cup last year
and they’ve added players like Guerin and Kunitz who have won the Cup
before.  Experience is so important in the playoffs.  It can be the
difference between rallying from a deficit and falling into a bigger
hole.
DCPSRCan you tell Caps fans the differences in the
Pens play or scheme since your new coach took over?  What changed for
the Pens?
Penguins Experience:  The Pittsburgh Penguins are much
more aggressive since Dan Bylsma took over the bench.  They’re faster,
they work harder and they battle for pucks.  The Penguins under Michel
Therrien were more defensive-minded.  They waited for their opponents
to make mistakes and then capitalized on them.  Dan Bylsma’s Penguins
forecheck aggressively and they try to force their opponent to make a
mistake.
DCPSRTell us a little bit about the Penguins
strengths and weaknesses and how they will favor the Pens so our
readers can get to know the Pens a bit better.
Penguins Experience:
Everyone knows about Malkin and Crosby.  They are two of the most
talented centers in the game.  The third line of Jordan Staal, Tyler
Kennedy and Matt Cooke was the Pens best line in the first round.  They
did the hard work, cycling, battling for pucks and forcing turnovers.
The Penguins added some grit at around the deadline, bringing Bill
Guerin and Chris Kunitz to the team.  Combined with Matt Cooke, this
gives the Pens the sand paper they need to wear down the Caps.
The Penguins biggest weakness in round one was
their power play.  They weren’t able to capitalize with the man
advantage and this could cost them dearly in the future.  Their power
play scored 12.5% of the time in round one.  That isn’t good enough.
Also, their second line wingers – especially Petr Sykora – have been
underperforming.  Evgeni Malkin was left to do it all himself and Dan
Byslma was sent scrambling to mix up line combinations.  Miroslav Satan
was dressed instead of Sykora for two games, but that didn’t seem to
help.  Ruslan Fedotenko and either Petr Sykora or Miroslav Satan need
to start scoring.
DCPSRGiven the Pens weaknesses you mentioned, What specific advantages do you think the Caps may have over the Pens.
Penguins Experience
Offense from the wing.  The Capitals have Alexander Semin and Alexander
Ovechkin.  The Penguins have no one on the wing that even come close to
matching either of those players.  The Capitals power play scored 18.2%
of the time in round one.  This is one area where the Caps could
dominate and score a few key goals.
DCPSRYour take on the whole Crosby/Malkin v. Ovechkin/Semin hype?
Penguins Experience: It’s already overdone and the series hasn’t even started yet.  The
worst is that Crosby and Ovechkin aren’t even talking about it.  In
every interview I’ve seen either of them in, they briefly discuss it
and then move on to something else.  I understand that the NHL sees a
great marketing opportunity here and wants to exploit it, but they’re
building it up as if Sid and Alex are mortal enemies, which they are
not.  Maybe after this series they will be though.
That being said, it is going to be a great series.
It may even actually live up to the hype.  I’ll be honest.  Once the
Capitals beat the Rangers I was cheering for Carolina so that we could
see this series in round two.  It’s going to be some outstanding hockey.
DCPSRCan you tell Caps fans how the progress is going on the Pens new arena?
Penguins Experience:
It looks like a building now.  It’s just a skeleton right now, but you
can tell what it’s going to be like.  It should be open for the 2010
season.  It’s going to be weird seeing the Pens in a building with a
restaurant an HD screens instead of a leaky roof and cramped
concourses.  That being said, the Mellon Arena will be missed.  It’s
such a unique building with a great history.
DCPSRPick one.  Who is the absolute key player for the Pens in this series?
Penguins Experience:
Marc-Andre Fleury.  He is going to face some of the best offensive
players in the league in this series and he will need to be at his
best.  If he continues to play at the level he reached during the
Philadelphia series, the Penguins should win the series.  Goaltending
is always incredibly important in the playoffs.
DCPSRFinally, tell us a bit about your blog and your coverage of the Pens?
Penguins Experience:  Penguins Experience opened just after last season.  We try to take a
more factual approach to our Penguins coverage, while throwing in some
humour here and there.

Again, thank you to Rick from Penguins Experience and we encourage our readers to make Penguins Experience a stop in their quest for playoff series coverage and knowledge.
