Boldin for the Redskins?

anquan-boldin-5.jpgOkay, if you’ve been reading the papers or watching ESPN, you know that disgruntled Arizona WR Anquan Boldin is on the trading block. And you know the Cardinals want a 1st and 3rd round draft picks for him. [Perfectly reasonable, I think.] Naturally, the Redskins have been mentioned as a possible trade partner. When it involves a high profile player who wants a lot of money, the Redskins are always mentioned.

No doubt, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder loves high-profile players who demand huge amounts of guaranteed money. Snyder also loves trading away valuable and relatively cheap draft picks for high profile players who demand huge amounts of guaranteed money. And Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for Boldin, has a very lucrative history [at least for Rosenhaus] with the Redskins and Snyder. So, maybe the Redskins should be mentioned.
On the other hand, the whole thing is absurd. Trading a first and a third for Boldin would require the Redskins to essentially give up what little remains of their 2009 draft. Don’t get me wrong — I don’t put it past Dan Snyder to do something like that, I’m just asserting that it would be crazy to do so. Furthermore, it would mean the Redskins are giving up on last year’s 2nd round picks, WR Devin Thomas and WR Malcolm Kelly. Maybe the Redskins should give up on those two players — they certainly did nothing to inspire confidence — but it seems a bit early to cut the cord with those two. Also, what would the Redskins do about the defensive and and right tackle positions? They have not addressed those positions [re-signing old and broken down players like Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels does not count] and the draft is pretty much the last chance they’ll have during the offseason to make a major acquisition to strengthen those weaknesses.

Finally, Boldin wants a ton of money. Don’t get me wrong — he
deserves it. Boldin is a terrific wideout. He’s got decent size, good
speed, very good hands, a knack for making the big play and is one of
the two or three toughest wideouts in the NFL. He’s fantastic. I’d love
to him him. But where are the Redskins going to find the cap space to
sign him to the contract he’s demanding so loudly that the Cardinals
feel it necessary to publicly entertain trading partners? The Redskins
are signing stiffs like Wynn and Daniels precisely because nobody wants
them and they are, therefore, very inexpensive. The Redskins don’t have
much cap space.
Nothing about this makes
sense for the Redskins. My guess is that Drew Rosenhaus is just putting
the team’s name out there because it inevitably drives up the price
teams have to pay for his client. Having the Redskins involved in any
trade or free agent negotiation is like waving  big dollar bills
around. It helped the Denver Broncos separate two first round picks
from the Chicago Bears and there is no reason why the Cardinals
shouldn’t want something similar.
Anquan
Boldin to the Redskins? I can see why Drew Rosenhaus would want people
to think such a thing is realistic, but it just is not.
