2010 Winter Ice Classic in Boston, Possible Caps in Classic

by Uncategorized

The NHL’s highly successful Winter Classic outside hockey will of course be back in 2010.  Word from the Boston Herald is, it will be in Boston at Fenway Park.

Don’t breathe a word of this. Because nobody’s supposed to know. But the Boston Bruins [team stats] will host the NHL‘s Winter Classic outdoor hockey game against an unnamed opponent Jan. 1 at Fenway Park [map]!

Our spies on Lansdowne Street say the League has given its blessing
to a 2010 New Year’s Day game in the Hub of Hockey, choosing Boston
over New York and Philadelphia.

Winter.jpgMakes sense.  Boston is a HUGE hockey town, much like Chicago and Buffalo, homes of the previous two Winter Classics.  The NHL stumbled on to something with the Winter Classic, as it not only gets media attention, but draw big crowds.

The first Winter Classic was played in Buffalo between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins.   The game drew an astonishing crowd of over 71,000 fans, the first outdoor NHL game in the USA.   The 2009 Winter Classic was played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, hosting the Detroit Red Wings against the Chicago Blackhawks.  The game sold to capacity, over 41,000 fans.

Wonder why the NHL would not want to showcase the Bruins and Caps, and showcase the best player in the world, Alexander Ovechkin?

UPDATE: Boston Globe has confirmed January 1 Winter Classic in Boston at Fenway Park and the Washington Capitals may very well be Boston’s opponent.

That same source indicated their opponent could be either the Capitals or Flyers, though no decision has been made.
