The Washington Capitals have recalled young goalie Simeon Varlamov. Varlamov was optioned to Hershey for the weekend, to help the Bears with a difficult three game weekend. His performance was nothing short of excellent.
The Bears defeated Bridgeport on Saturday, behind excellent goal tending and a ton of offensive fire power. Varlamov stopped 24 of 26 shots for the win. Last night, Varlamov was impressive again, stopping 36 of 37 shots, but taking the loss, as the Bears were defeated 1-0. The Hershey fire power fizzled last night. Bears remain atop Bridgeport for first place in the Eastern Conference, recording 101 points. Wilkes-Barre Scranton and Bridgeport are in second place with 96. Alexandre Grioux set a Hershey record, the first player to record 54 goals in the 76 year history of the franchise. Congrats to Alex Grioux from DCPSR!
One healthy, one not . . . Enforcer Donald Brashear has returned to practice after missing the last several games with a knee sprain. Brashear will be a welcome addition back to Line 4 that has been playing steady, but missing his physical presence. Missing from practice was D Mike Green. Good thing is, Caps are off until Wednesday.
Tarik provides a good write up on recent prospect call up Oscar Osala. I like Osala and regard him as one of the top prospects in the system. At 6’4″, 220, Osala isn’t afraid to throw his physical presence around and is not afraid to go the net either.
“For any defenseman at the NHL or AHL level, it’s hard to deal with
him,” Bears Coach Bob Woods said by phone. “You have to keep him from
going to the corners where he finishes his checks and it’s tough for
somebody to take the puck away from him. With the new rules, you’re
limited to what you can do and he knows how to use his size well.”
In case you are wondering where the Caps are, as far as Southeast Division, they need 23 points to clinch their second consecutive SE Championship. Or, if the Capitals defeat the NY Islanders on Wednesday and the Carolina Hurricanes lose on Wednesday, Caps clinch.
