Mayor Fenty on the Redskins in DC

AUTHOR: | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 1 Comment |

In an interview with the Washington City Paper, Mayor Fenty was asked directly about the Washington Redskins possible relocation back to Washington, DC.

We’re gonna push to get the Redskins back. And if we have to
convince them, we’ll convince them. As they say in the movie, we’ll make
‘em an offer they can’t refuse
….It’s not a one-year project to get
them back, so I mean, whatever economy were in right now, we won’t be
in that economy when dollars are spent.

What is interesting about this is the part I bolded for emphasis.  And just how is Mayor Fenty going to do that?  The City is dead broke.  The City almost fumbled the Nationals Park deal.  How does he think he will possibly be able to entice Dan Snyder enough?  Do the Redskins want to return to Washington, DC?  I bet, yes.  Would the City be able to put up a financial package making it worthwihle for Dan Snyder?  I doubt it.  Thoughts?

I give Mayor Fenty high marks for consistency for his high profile opposition to Anthony Williams' push to lure MLB to DC. Fenty was wrong, but stood by his position, unlike others on the DC Council who came off as wishy-washy -- they were for MLB, until they were against it, but gladly took credit and front row seats when the stadium opened.
So, did hizzoner get a clue that deals like this can spark public development that generates tax revenue from suburbanites who work in DC but who don't pay income tax? (Try living in DC and being employed in Virginia.)
Is that going to give Fenty and the Council the backbone to face up to DC voters who WILL challenge the value of a financial package to the area's wealthiest resident?
I think the whole thing is hilarious.
Daniel Snyder didn't get rich spending his money. He got rich spending other people's money.
