Prospect goalie Simeon Varlamov made his first start for Hershey tonight since January 14, back from injury. Varly stopped 20 of 21 shots to help lift the Bears to a 6-1 win over Toronto. The win improves Varlamov’s AHL record to 17-5.
Bears netminder Simeon Varlamov, making his first start since
mid-January due to a knee injury, stopped 20 of 21 shots. He was
particularly sharp in stoning Toronto sniper Tim Stapleton twice in the
opening frame and robbing defenceman Joe Ryan in the slot on a Marlies
power play.“He’s quick,” Stapleton said. “It’s almost like he reacts before you
shoot. He’s an outstanding goaltender and obviously a big part of their
win tonight.”
Brian Pothier made his return to the ice tonight, took some big hits and seemed to do pretty well. Pothier has missed the last 14 months after suffering a hit against Philadelphia and suffering a concussion that had some pretty serious side effects. But Pothier has worked hard to make a return and tonight marked his first physical hockey game, a big test. He seemed to have passed it well.
Scoring it up for the Bears tonight, Alexandre Giroux added two goals, he now has 45 on the season, and Francois Bouchard also scored twice.
Other news, Tyler Sloan was recalled to Washington from Hershey, signaling that Tom Poti will likely miss tomorrows game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
