The Washington Nationals may have increased their offer to slugging first baseman free agent Mark Teixeira to as much as $178-184 million over 8 years. Although Nats team President Stan Kasten would not discuss the proposal, he did say: ”There are bargains, but luxury goods are still not being discounted.” Clearly, the Nats regard Teixeira as the highest of the high end luxury items.
Various news reports late last week pegged the Boston offer to be as high as $184 million over eight years, though subsequent rumors suggested that the numbers are a little lower — perhaps between $165 million and $180 million. The Orioles have the weakest offer of the bunch — a proposal reportedly worth between $140 million and $150 million over seven years.
So far, no team involved has offered a contract longer than eight years. Teixeira’s agent, Scott Boras, entered the free agency process hoping his client could attract a 10-year deal. Either way, Teixeira will end up with one of the biggest paydays in baseball history, almost certainly exceeding the $161 million (over seven years) that fellow free agent CC Sabathia received from the Yankees earlier this offseason.
I don’t see Teixeira and Boras getting that 10 years, but obviously he’ll be one of the richest athletes in the history of American pro sports. We will see if the Yankees upset the applecart and come in with a last-second bid. It seems the Orioles are out unless they put a different, far more generous, bid on the table. Right now, it seems to be between the Red Sox and the Nats. Realistically, the Nats will have to offer a premium to get Teixeira. If the money is even or close, Teixeira would be crazy to go to Washington when he can go to a winner in Boston.
And I’m starting to think: For the money the Nats could give to Teixeira, they could probably sign Adam Dunn and a decent pitcher. Maybe that’s the way to go, eh?
