Caps go from MASH Unit to, well, MASH Unit

by Uncategorized

Right when you think the Washington Capitals have weathered through their worst injury stretch, are finally getting healthy, the MASH unit re-arrives.  After a brief hint of health, the Capitals are headed back to the infirmary.
Tomorrow the Capitals face off against the New York Rangers, in New York.  They will so without Alexander Semin, Mike Green, and Tom Poti.  Listed as questionable are Donald Brashear and David Steckel.  I am sure Bob Woods is sitting by the phone in Hershey, because it looks pretty certain there will be at least 1 call up, if not 2.
Semin was injured in a completely blown call against the St. Louis Blues on a uncalled cross check in the back.  I suspect, much like Tarik at the Washington Post, we will not see Semin for awhile, probably at least 7 to 10 games.  Poti is suffering from a strained groin.  Mike Green re-aggravated his previous shoulder injury, but does not appear to be that bad where he will miss as much as he did previously.  Donald Brashear took a slash to the ankle and is nursing soreness while Steckel is sick.
Looking forward to Tarik’s article on goal tending tomorrow.  The Capitals are 6 points in the lead in the Southeast Division and tied for third overall in the Eastern Conference.   Like Tarik, I too believe the Capitals could challenge for first overall in the Eastern Conference with better goal tending.  The Caps got the offensive fire power.  They are 6th overall in the NHL in the Power Play and in goals scored.  They are 4th overall in shots on goal.  BUT, they are also 6th overall in goals ALLOWED.
The problem is not that Washington is not getting good goal tending.  They have.  The problem is, they are not getting consistency.  I have a solution.  Let’s get Simeon Varlamov up to Washington, where he belongs, and let’s start working him and getting him between the pipes.
