The Washington Capitals are coming off a weekend split, defeating Toronto 2-1, but falling to division rival Carolina 3-1. I am sure the Caps would love to give up the Toronto win in exchange for Carolina. Caps remain in first place in the Southeast Division with a 15-10-3 record and a 4 point lead over Carolina. They need this time off until Wednesday to heal. The Caps have a total of 9 injuries are are more and more looking like the Hershey Bears. Here are your injuries and replacements:
The Caps currently have 6 Hershey Bears on roster: D Karl Alzner, D Sami Lepisto, D Sean Collins, D Brian Helmer, F Alexandre Giroux, and F Keith Aucoin.
Out injured: F Alexander Semin, F Eric Fehr, F Sergei Fedorov, F Chris Clark, D Jeff Schultz, D Tom Poti, D John Erskine.
Let’s consider ourselves luck that we are still sitting atop the Southeast.
Congrats to 2007 first round pick Karl Alzner. Alzner scored his first NHL goal of his career in Washington’s 2-1 win over Torontoo. Alzner also recorded a helper on the second goal.
Congrats to the Hershey Bears. The Bears are one of the oldest hockey teams in organized professional hockey, now in their 71st year. On Saturday, the Bears tied their franchise record, winning their tenth consecutive game. On Sunday, they rewrote bears history, winning their 11th straight game and improving their season to 20-5-1. What is even more impressive, and thrilling for the Washington Capitals, they are winning with some new prospects from South Carolina (ECHL).
The Bears continue their winning ways with a patchwork roster because of depletion to Washington from Capitals injuries. It must be pretty encouraging to the Washington brass to know the kids in South Carolina are moving up to Hershey and contributing in the wins. Don’t think for one minute that Hershey Coach Bob Woods is not thrilled.
“It’s awesome,” said Woods, Hershey’s head coach. “You look at what this team has overcome in the last two-three weeks, it makes it even more special. Credit to these guys. They just refuse to lose — no matter who we have in the lineup, no matter who we’re playing against.”
Hershey blanked Norfolk on Sunday, getting goals from Chris Bourque, Graham Mink, and South Carolina call up Steve Pinizotto. On Saturday, the Bears got a goal from another South Carolina call up, Maxime Lacroix. Daren Machensey pitched a shutout in the net, stopping all 25 shots on goal. The night before Simeon Vaarlamov stopped 26 of 28 shots to earn the win. Check out these impressive numbers form the two Hershey netminders …
Daren Machensey: W/L (9-3), GAA:2.29, Save%: .908, Shutouts: 1
Simeon Varalamov: W/L (10-2), GAA:2.53, Save%: .894, Shutouts: 3
Still worried about the goal tending in DC in the future?
