Wash Post Live Chat on the 'Skins

by Uncategorized

Jason LaCanfora had a live chat today on the Washington Redskins.  We haven’t done it in awhile, so we will now, let’s take a look at some things JLC had to say, and how it fits with what we here at DCPSR see.
Here’s a question from a frustrated fan …

Q:  I would think they would eventually improve a little each game if it’s something they are actually focusing on in practice.

This is starting to feel like the Lions of 2007. Started 6-2 in the first half, and have since gone 1-3 (a good chance of going 1-4).

JLC:  I don’t think they are close to being the wreck the Lions have become. But I agree this goes much deeper than execution – horrid personnel decisions and a predictable scheme are involved, too, for sure.
I’m not sure this is the week they put up big numbers on offense. I think they need to get Betts very involved int he check down game, find more intermediate stuff for Cooley (and theyre going to have to get him in motion more I think) and get going on some gadget plays and trickery.
As we have said before, we pretty much agree.  The play calling is predictable and surprisingly, given it is Jim Zorn, pretty unimpressive.  How many short, quick screen will we throw before we figure out defense have gamed for it?   Second, the decision to take two WRs and a TE in the second round was questionable from the start, mostly because this team had other areas that desperately need attention.  Giving up a second round pick for an aging DE like Jason Taylor was simple robbery by Miami.  In a draft where the Redskins need picks, we walk in without a second rounder.  Nice.
As far as on our three second round rookies, JLC actually makes the perfect statement regarding where we are with these guys …

Time is running out on this season and all around the NFL you hear vets talking about how their rookies aren’t rookies anymore, and after 12 games they are different players and have really come along, etc. Not so much in DC, eh?

These guys are no where near veteran, not even close.  I would say at this point — just pray one of them turns out half way decent.  My bet of all of them, it will be Malcolm Kelly.   Kelly’s problem is not speed, intelligence, or talent, it is health.  Period.
On the draft and the biggest Redskins needs …

It’s hard to say what happens in the draft, because so much will be predicated on free agency, which comes first. If they don’t invest heavily in the draft on both sides of the line very soon, and in terms of quantity and quality, then you will not see sustained success from this franchise. It will be more of the same.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have been saying this and saying it again.  We fans may not want to admit the bad state are Lines are in and how they have contributed to mediocre play for nearly 8 years, but NFL Scout and NFL Defensive Coordinators know it.  They knew it when Spurrier was here and they blitzed.  They knew it when Gibbs was here, and forced two TE sets.  They know it when Zorn is here, and they blitz, stall drives, and sack JC 32 times.
As far as the DLine, come on folks, you watch games every friggin week.  How much time do opposing QBs have to scan the field.  Be honest.  Tons of time!  Our highest sacking DE has what — 3.5 sacks?
On the Heyer/Jansen thing …

From talking to guys on defense who see him in practice, they tell me that they can’t bank on Heyer being a definite as a starting tackle in this league. He still has leverage issues, his backside gets too high, and he lacks Jansen’s drive in the run game.
If Heyer was a given he’d be in there. Now, to me they’re reaching a point where you might want to play the kid against some serious defenses and get a clearer idea
Hmmmm.  Not encouraging.  Especially with the Line needs we have.
