The Washington Nationals have to be pretty pleased with some of the stats some of their prospects are putting up in Winter Baseball.
First up are the two infielders acquired last season. 2B Emilio Bonafacio was dealt in the off-season to the Florida Marlin for P Scott Olsen and OF Josh Willingham. Bonafacio was acquired from Arizona when the Nationals dealt RP Jon Rauch to the Diamondbacks. Bonafacio became expendable when another acquired youngster, Anderson Hernandez, played well at the end of the season, finishing up hitting .333.
Hernandez isn’t doing all that bad in Winter ball either, hitting an impressive .370 in 1623 at bats, including 15 doubles and 24 RBis. Hernandez is expected to be the Washington Nationals starting second baseman. IF Alberto Gonzales is hitting .342 in 76 at bats. Gonzales will be expected to play a utility role and backup SS Christian Guzman.
After hitting .269 with 18 homers and 89 RBIs between Hagerstown and Harrisburg last season, 2007 draft pick 1B Bill Rhinehart is having a fine winter season. In the Arizona League, Rhinehart is hitting .326 with 4 homers, 26 RBIs and 19 runs scored in 23 games. Rhinehart will likely get a camp invite and start the season in Harrisburg (AA) or Syracuse (AAA).
OF Justin Maxwell is struggling at the plate hitting .180 in 66 at bats. He does have 6 homers. Another prospect not talked about much, but putting up nice numbers is OF Jorge Padilla. Padilla hit a combined .317 in 114 games last year between Harrisburg and Columbus. n AAA, over an 81 game span, Padilla hit .312. This winter, Padilla has hit .302 in 66 at bats with 4 homers and 20 RBis.
2007 first rounder Ross Detwiler has made 9 appearances in winter ball and is 0-0 with a 4.83 ERA. He has recorded 7 strikeouts in 11.2 innings.
