JLC from the Washington Post knows how to douse us with a ray of good news, but then lower the boom with bad news.
The bad — Jim Zorn apparently was hoping for better news regarding RB Clinton Portis. Apparently, all Portis could manage to do today was receive treatment on the knee. No practice on Friday, usually means no game on Sunday. It really does baffle me how we come out of the Bye week in worse shape at running back than what we were when we went into it. Staggering.
Marcus Washington and Anthony Montgomery are unlikely to play Sunday. You know how I fell about Washington. He is beyond his prime, spends many weeks injured, and I think we are better and quicker with HB Blades in the game. As for Montgomery’s injury, that means additional minutes for Lorenzo Alexander at DT, spelling Kedric Golston.
The good — DC Greg Blache had his press conference and delivered some good news, defensively. Blache signaled that both DE Jason Taylor and newly acquired CB DeAngelo Hall will be ready to roll for Sunday.
Blache believes that oft-injured end Jason Taylor is ready to make an impact now that he is finally healthy. Blache said that before Taylor was “a guy trying to play on one leg” – which brings me back to my queston early on as to why even dress him? – and that he’s “excited to see him” back on the field.
WR Malcolm Kelly appears healthy now, running well, no swelling or pain. Don’t expect to see him on the field this week though, nothing to do with injury, more to do with getting studied up on the offense. But, the good news is, there is light at the end of the tunnel for Kelly.
Kelly would love to face the Cowboys – the team he grew up cheering for but no longer has an allegiance to – but Coach Jim Zorn said he does not expect him to play. The Redskins hope he will get into a game soon after this weekend and that he will not have to go on the injured-reserve list, ending his season.
Wondering about Erasmus James? Here is an interesting tidbit as well. This goes back to what Spence here at DC Pro Sports Report said when we made the trade to Minnesota to obtained DE Erasmus James. I remember Spence specifically telling me, don’t expect anything from James and anything we do get will be pure gravy. Seems like Spence was dead on.
I asked Blache about DE Erasmus James, who would have been atop my list of guys to let go when Hall was added (rather than Leigh Torrence), and whether he would be a bigger part of the plans over the last seven games. Blache pulled no punches, saying, “not necessarily.” He said that unless injuries occurred, he did not foresee James playing much, and “I’d be pulling your leg,” to say anything other than that.
Thanks for asking the question Jason!
