The Nationals made two roster moves, one major, one minor.
First, the Washington Nationals have moved into the post-Dmitri Young Era, optioning him outright to Syracuse (AAA). Although the nationals claim the move in an Administrative move, I am hard pressed to believe the Nats will not look at other options at first base in 2009. One such look could be at 2007 draft pick Bill Rhinehart.
The Nationals also swapped minor league pitchers with the Chicago Cubs.
The Nationals acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Matt Avery from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for left-handed pitcher Ryan Buchter.
Avery, a Fairfax Virginia native who attended the Landon School for Boys in Bethesda, MD, is a combined 13-12 with a 3.55 ERA in 147 games, 14 starts, at the Minor League level. The 25-year old earned Single-A Midwest League mid-season All-Star honors in 2006.
Avery was the Cubs’ 9th-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Virginia, where he played with Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman for three seasons. Buchter, the Nationals 33rd round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player draft, has a 5.42 ERA in 48 games, one start, as a pro.
Expect this move to have ZERO impact.
