It was a wild first two periods seeing the Capitals and Thrashers tally 8 goals to a 4-4 stalemate. Mid-way through the third period, the turn took a turn for the worse as Atlanta piled up 3 unanswered goals to defeat the Capitals in the season opener for both teams, 7-4.

More troubling for Caps fans was the play at goalie, the one and only big question mark heading into the 2008/09 season. Jose Theodore gave up 4 goals in the first period on 17 shots before being yanked by Bruce Boudreau and replaced with Brent Johnson. Johnson gave up three goals after the 8 minute mark to lose the game.
The Caps fell back 3-0 in a shocking first period before Alexander Semin score a little after the 14 minute mark of the first period to bring the game to 3-1. Dave Steckel would cut the deficit to 3-2 on a short handed goal. The 1 goal deficit would last just 20 seconds when the Thrashers scored again moving to a 4-2 lead. That’s when Mike Green took over. Green scored two unanswered goals to lead the Capitals back to a 4-4 tie at the end of the second period. Both of Green’s goals came on the same 4 minute major power play. Overall, Washington was 2 for 7 on the power play, that looked at times in disarray.
Atlanta would go on to scored 3 unanswered goals in the third period. Theodore stopped 13 of 17 shots before being yanked, Johnson stopped 11 of 14.
