This is the Weekly Redskins Youth Report. However, since we are at the quarter point of the season, time to give our quarterly assessment and grades to the Redskins rookies and 2nd year players. These grades are based on play and impact. We will start out with the rookies.
THE ROOKIES
QB Colt Brennan
Colt Brennan ejected his only competition for the third QB slot, former Terp Sam Hollenbach, relatively quickly. Brennan went on to have a pretty decent pre-season, good enough to allow some ridiculous fans to make some ridiculous calls for Brennan to start over the NFL’s 4th highest rated passer. Where are those fans at now?
Fact is, Brennan has done a splendid job holding the clip board. That’s his job and he has excelled. Even better, Brennan is learning the system under no pressure. Kind of hard to grade a player that hasn’t steppe don and off the field except for pre-game warm-ups and to shake hands post-game.
Grade: Incomplete (and let’s keep it that way!)
P Durant Brooks
Brooks got off a to a horrific start of the season, shanking several and averaging around 33 yards per kick. Brooks has shown signs of waking up out of his rut that nearly cost him his job after only two weeks in the NFL. He is currently averaging 40.4 yards per punt, dead last in the NFL. Here’s the thing with Brooks, the kid was the number one Punter in college football last year, averaging over 46 yards per punt. He can kick. BUT, he has to do it at the NFL level and be able to handle the pressure of professional football. Whether he can do that or not, that jury remains out. Don’t expect to get a ‘C’ or ‘D’ in my book when you come out of college the bets punter in the nation and sit at the bottom of the stats in the NFL. Doesn’t work for me.
2008 Stats: 17 Punts, 40.4 average, 6 Ins the 20, 1 Ins the 10
Grade: F
TE Fred Davis
The Redskins had high hopes for Davis when they selected him in the second round of the NFL Draft. Davis would provide a two Tight End threat along with Chris Cooley. Problem is, Davis hasn’t played much. It doesn’t appear to be from injury, is simply appears to be that Davis is not ready for a larger role in the Zorn offensive system. To me, that is just down right alarming. Davis is a big threat, has great size, and good hands. Many draft scouts and experts had Davis listed as the best TE in the 2008 Draft. In 4 games, Davis has managed just 1 reception. Whether this is by design or not, I don’t have a clue. Yes, Chris Cooley is the number one TE, we know that, he is one of the top threats in the NFL. The Redskins also love the blocking they get from Todd Yoder. I got to think at this point, Jim Zorn is happy with the way things are clicking and a bigger role for Fred Davis may not occur anytime soon. This grade reflects the expectations versus what the Redskins have gotten the first quarter of the season.
2008 Stats: Receps: 1, Yds: 6, AVG: 6.0, TDs: 0
Grade: F
S Chris Horton
Did anyone expect Horton to have made the impact that he has, so soon? Not me. Chris Horton has been nothing short of stellar. So good that he sits second overall in the NFL with 3 interceptions. Horton has a knack for making plays and being around the football. He hustles and gets aggressive, not just on defense, but on special teams as well. There are calls out there for Horton to start over Reed Doughty. Those calls are allowed and clear. Those calls are right. Horton is a play maker and the defense plays better when Horton is out there. The amazing thing about Horton, he is a seventh round draft pick. Hold your breath, because I am going to say it, but the impact Horton is having and the good words coming out about Kareem Moore, these guys are looking like brilliant picks by Vinny Cerrato, excellent scouting. Horton and Moore remind me of the two big defensive tackles we took in the 5th and 6th rounds, Anthony Montgomery and Kedric Golston. Remember them? More mid-draft gems. But Horton himself is amazing in that he as a 7th round pick. Horton, in only 4 short games, has won Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie Defensive Player of the Month recognitions. He deserves the grade he gets.
