One things the Redskins need to do on Sunday is something they did not do last Thursday, move the ball. QB Jason Campbell has take a brunt of criticism for the lack of offense, although, in fairness to Campbell, I think much of the poor look on offense had to do with the offensive line and Jim Zorn. But, Campbell has taken the criticism in stride.
“Scrutiny is part of the job, especially at quarterback,” Campbell said. “You are going to get a lot of blame when things don’t go right and sometimes not enough credit when things do go right.”
After the dismal start of the offense, Campbell is a prime news item. John Keim joins in with a good read. And another from Paul Woody.
Injury Notes: LB Khary Campbell, LB Marcus Washington, and CB Fred Smoot all sat out of practice but will be ready for Sunday. As for Washington, it is a minor hip injury. Does Marcus Washington not have a minor hip injury every single year since he arrived here? DE Jason Taylor says he is nowhere near 100%. This sis pretty concerning to me, we saw how the Giants exploited Taylor’s knee last week, running forcefully to his side. You don’t think the Saints and Reggie Bush are gonna do the same? TE Chris Cooley also missed practice, but he will play. Of course, he might as well not if they plan to throw to him only twice. If your wanting further info on Cooley’s minor ailment, read it from him. And Chris, you were 8-8??? HAHAHA. Oh wait, I was 6-10. Forget it!
The official Redskins blog has more on the injuries. On Cooley …
Most importantly, especially to the folks who frantically emailed me: CHRIS COOLEY IS FINE. He had what called “a little soreness in my quad” at today’s morning practice, and thought that the best option was to rest it today.

Lingering worries
Kelly Back on the Field . . .

Kelly may make debut … The Redskins are just as eager as WR Malcolm Kelly to see Malcolm Kelly in the game, his potential professional debut on Sunday. There is no doubt the Redskins are hurting at receiver. Fact is, the Redskins desperately need tall receivers. Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El simply can’t do what tall receivers can, and we saw that last season. So the redskins drafted two in the second round, Kelly at 6’4″ and Devin Thomas at 6’2″. Neither has had the impact expected, mostly due to lingering, nagging injuries. If Kelly can provide a glimpse of what the Redskins think he can, he could help jettison this offense.
“I know what I can do,” Kelly said earlier this week at Redskins Park. “Once I get on the field, I know what’s going to happen. I know I’ve been out, and I know the doubters are out there, but I can play this game. And to know that I have the confidence in the guy who’s going to be throwing you the ball, that means a lot.”
What’s that phrase … ‘show me the money?’ That’s all were asking Malcolm, show us you will earn the money! A very encouraging part of this read is that Jason Campbell has stepped up to mentor Kelly and lend advice. That’s a huge positive as JC begins taking on more than just the QB role, but also a leadership role. The fact JC has taken such an interest in Kelly witnesses to the fact that JC knows how valuable Kelly can be to his future.
About the West Coast offense … Tom Boswell gives his opinion on the lag of the West Coast offense and implementation in DC. Boswell points out, even though Zorn disdains the shotgun, JC was simply better in it.
One fact is most telling: In desperation, the Redskins eventually let Campbell operate from the shotgun, a formation Zorn disdains but one in which Campbell is comfortable. In the gun, he completed 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards with one dropped pass, two near-miss bombs and one pass caught out of bounds.
But, Boswell still seems apprehensive and wonders whether Campbell can excel in a system he may just not be meant for.
For Zorn, one of the top priorities is third down conversions. I have an idea. It’s novel. I got it while watching the Skins. Here it is. When it is 3rd and 8, don’t throw 3 yards. When it is 3rd and 6, don’t throw 2 yards. When it is 3rd and 10, don’t throw 5 yards. There you go, a solution at hand! Gibbs never learned that simply concept either.
The Redskins came up 1 or 2 yards short of a first down three times – all in the third quarter.
See above.
Heck, Rick Snider is already wondering who goes first? Campbell or Zorn.
Two former ‘Skins sign elsewhere. Todd Wade to Jacksonville, Billy McMullen to Seattle.
In case you were wondering [the Redskins do] …. here you go.
