Good, we want you to as well.
As many of you can tell by the links above, we are developing team pages for each DC Pro Sports team. Now included on the Capitals page, is a Capitals poll that will keep updated with new polls, especially once the season starts in October. Yes, hockey is coming quickly, woooohoooo!
So the capitals enter 2008/09 season with a different look at goalie, different than the past 18 years. Gone is 18 year Capital Olie Kolzig. Kolzig lost his starting job after 18 years at the trade deadline last season when the Capitals made a stunning trade to Montreal for goalie Cristobal Huet. It was stunning simply because the trade came out of nowhere. In fact, about a week before the trade deadline, the caps didn’t even know Huet would be available. That trade, in all intents and purposes, effectively ended Kolzig’s long career in Washington> Subsequently, Kolzig inked a free agent deal with division rival Tampa Bay Lightning.
For the caps, the gaol was pretty clear, reign Huet. Huet made his intent known he was happy in DC, and the caps made it known that they wanted Huet back. With negotiations coming quickly tot he trade deadline without a deal, the Caps realized that the opportunity to sign Huet no longer exists, and in fact Huet really didn’t want to come back as he took his pads and departed for the Chicago Blackhawks. The Capitals quickly inked former Colorado Avalanche goalie Jose Theodore to a two year deal.
Many Washington fans expressed disappointment in the inability to snag Huet for a longer term deal. His play down the stretch led the Capitals to not just the playoffs, but the Southeast division championship. Over that stretch, Huet was 11-2 with 1.63 GAA and save percentage of .936. But, what some Caps fans may not know is, Jose Theodore was just as impressive in that same stretch with Colorado. Theodore went 12-4-1 with a 2.27 GAA in his final 18 games. For the season, Theodore was 28-21-3 with a 2.44 GAA and a save percentage of .910.
