Smoke Signals: You better be ready Jason Campbell Edition

AUTHOR: dcprosportsreport | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet

The first week of the NFL season is upon us and the Redskins will kick it off on Thursday against division rival and Superbowl Champion NY Giants, in New York.  Rosters are set and all that is left in a final two days of preparation.
So what’s the key to success?  Same thing it what last year.  Jason Campbell.   Forget all the excuses that Campbell is in yet another system (what is it now, 8?).   Jason Campbell has to emerge as leader of the team and  run the offense effectively, no excuses of system, no excuses he is young, bottom line is, Campbell has to step up and show he can lead this offense and become a top NFL passer.
Jon Jansen is not the only one getting used to not having the starting role.  Just one year removed as starter on the defensive line, defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery is set on watching his best friend and fellow draft classmate Kedric Golston start against the NY Giants.

“It looks like it’s going to be Kedric,” Montgomery said. “He’s getting most of the reps in practice and after the Jacksonville game [preseason finale]. I’m guessing they made their evaluation, and that’s who they chose to be the starter. So I just have to focus on my role.”

I doubt playing time will be an issue though given the way Greg Blache rotates defensive lineman, particularly in the middle, Montgomery will spend a large part of the time on the field.  So two casualties of starters, Montgomery and Jansen will watch from a different perspective on Thursday.
Jason La Canfora confirms the Redskins are not pursuing Denver Bronco CB Dominique Foxworth, who Denver is reportedly shopping.  Thats a good thing.  I think the Redskins are pretty set with Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers, Fred Smoot, and Leigh Torrence.
The Redskins have finalized their practice squad by adding former Auburn WR Devin Aromashodu.   Aromashodu played at Auburn when current Redskins Jason Campbell and Carlos Rogers played at Auburn.  Aromashodu completes the practice squad that includes:  FB Nehemiah Broughton, OL Devin Clark, OL Andrew Crummey, WR Horace Gant, LB Curtis Gatewood, CB Byron Westbrook, and CB Matteral Richardson.
In case you missed, former Redskins P Derrick Frost signed with the Green Bay Packers after the Packers released P Jon Ryan.
Check out Rich Tandler’s Ranking the Redskins 1-10.  Dallas Morning News writes an article focusing on the NFC East special teams.  It’s worth a read.  Was anyone surprised that Horace Gant made the practice squad over Maurice Mann?  I was.  I thought Mann showed some flashed of raw talent and earned a spot over others on the practice squad.  Not really sure was Gant landed there except for the personal connection to Chris Meidt.

“This one is the most disappointing,” Mann said. “I felt I did everything possible, everything they asked of me. I’m mature enough to handle this. But you wonder if this is your last time.”

Mann played well in the preseason for the Redskins, catching 11 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. He led the team in receptions in the final preseason game with four for 39 yards.

Not only am I shell shocked the Redskins only chose to carry 5 wide receivers, with one of them injured (Malcolm Kelly), but knowing Anthony Mix and Billy McMullen were not practice squad possibilities, it was pretty surprising that Gant got the spot over Mann, who clearly performed better int he pre-season.

Your Redskins Blog Chatter:  MVN Hog Haven previews the Redskins offensive line.  Skin Patrol at Hogs Haven has you covered with one in depth gambling article on the Skins.  Matt Terl tells us Laron landry is fired up and that is damn good news.  By the way Matt, we absolutely agree with you on Shaun Shuisham.  Dude missed his first field goal of pre-season and has been 100% since.
Chris Cooley reveals the Redskins team captains.  Congrats to Jason Campbell and Chris Samuels (Offense),  London Fletcher and Cornelius Griffin (Defense), and  Rock Cartwright and Khary Campbell (Special Teams).

Here’s the Redskins.com game preview.  Here’s a pretty slanted, and well, arrogant article from MVN Giants.  I think they forgot or it went to their head, that the Giants are one of the most overrated teams in all of sports.  More game previews:  TheOnLineWire NJ.com, and Bleacher Report,
