Tarik at the Washington Post is reporting the Washington capitals have announced they plan to retire Mike Gartner’s #11. Gartner’s #11 will be the fourth number in Washington Capitals history to be retired and never to be worn again, and will join Rod Langway (5), Yvon Labre (7) and Dale Hunter (32).
Gartner was a 4th overall, 1st round selection of the Washington Capitals in the 1979 NHL entry draft. He played 19 seasons in the NHL, 10 of which were with the Caps. He made 7 appearances in the NHL All Star Game.
In 19 season, Gartner compiled 708 goals and 627 assists in 1,432 games. He also scored 43 goals and added 50 assists in 122 playoff appearances.
Gartner is second overall in goals score din Capitals history with 397, 75 behind Caps all time leading scorer Peter Bondra. He is also second overall of all time for the Caps in assists with 392, 26 behind Caps all time assist leader Michal Pivonka. He is also second overall in total points with 789, 36 behind Bondra. He is 7th overall in Caps history for penalty minutes.
Gartner was elected to the NHL Hall of Fame in 2001.
