I heard a semi-heated conversation on local sports radio WTEM this morning about players being forced to play on Thursday instead of having the week off, due to the horrid performance against Carolina. Some commentators said Head Coach Jim Zorn is risking the wrath of his players by calling them out publicly on their terrible performance and making them play on Thursday. My view is that the players should WANT to play after that gridiron abortion they laid on us last Saturday. It seems the players agree.
“Yeah, no doubt we have to do this,” wide receiver Antwaan Randle El said. “With the way we played, it’s just the right thing to do.”
Offensive coordinator Sherman Smith said that the group has too much pride “to let that be the last taste in their mouth. I never doubted that they’d want to go back out [Thursday, in the preseason finale against Jacksonville at FedEx Field] and show what they’re about.”
Players said that Zorn has not specified how many series they can expect to play. They’ll game plan for the first two series, but if they “sustain a drive, it might be one and out.”
Struggles weren’t limited to the offense Saturday. “This is the first time since I’ve been here that I would say the other team played with more intensity than we did,” linebacker London Fletcher said. “Obviously we didn’t need to see the game tape to know we didn’t play well. This is the right thing to do.”
Good to see the players have taken the proper attitude to this. Zorn isn’t showing them disrespect by ordering them to play Thursday. The players showed disrespect to their coaches, their fans and the game itself by giving such a lame performance last Saturday. It is one thing to get blown out after working hard against a very good team. That’s not what happened last weekend. The Redskins were out-hustled, out-worked and out-classed by a team that went 7-9 a year ago. Time to make up for it.
