Let’s begin taking a look at where and how the 2007 Washington Nationals draft picks are. We will start at the bottom of the draft, the last pick in the draft for the Nats. Those highlighted in RED are ones we point out as impressive.
OF Jacob Dugger, 49th Round, Vermont (A): Dugger finished his college car5eer last season and never put a uniform on for the Nationals. He was assigned to the Vermont Lake Monsters this year and has played in 42 games, hitting .193 with 20 runs, 2 homers and 15 RBis.
RP Kyle Gunderson, 48th Round, Potomac (A): Gunderson, take way late in the 48th round, has been a pleasant surprise for the Nationals. Gunderson could make a run at the closer role for the Nationals in a few years. Last season, his debut, he was 0-1 with 4 saves and an impressive ERA of 0.48, allowing just 1 run in 18.2 innings. Gunderson started the season and pitched in 42 games for Hagerstown and posted a 4-2 record with 8 saves and a 2.60 ERA, before being promoted to the Potomac Nationals. In 4 appearances with the Nats, Gunderson is 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA. Keep an eye on Gunderson as he climbs through the system.
OF Garrett Charles Bass, 42nd Round, Hagerstown (A): Bass started the season in the rookie GCL Nationals, but only started for 7 games in which eh hit .412 with 2 doubles and 2 runs. Bass was promoted to Hagerstown and has played in 33 games and is struggling at .188.
P Kai Tuomi, 40th Round, Hagerstown (A): Tuomi just started his professional career in Hagerstown and is 1-1 with a 5.41 ERA in 5 appearances.
P Shane Erb, 38th Round, GCL Nationals (Rookie): Erb has pitched in 13 games and is 1-1 with a 7.94 ERA. he ha sallowed 27 hits and 8 walks in 17.2 innings.
RP Martin Beno, 36th Round, Potomac (A): Marty Beno could join in a pretty fierce battle for bullpen spots in DC in a few years with Gunderson and Adam Carr. Beno pitched in 16 games in Vermont last season posting a 2-1 record with 2 saves and a 4.15 ERA. He started this year off in Hagerstown where he pitched in 15 games was 0-1 with 6 saves and a 3.38 ERA. He was promoted mid-season to Potomac and is 0-1 with 7 saves with an ERA of 5.72. Beno will need to work on the off-season with his control if he wants to continue to progress as fats as he has. In 28.1 innings, Beno has allowed 44 walks in Potomac. He is a prospect worth keeping an eye on.
C Dan Killian, 32nd Round, GCL: Killian has played in 38 games with the Gulf Coast League Nationals and is batting .169 with 27 RBis. In 124 at bats, Killian has struck out 36 times.
P Justin Phillabaum, 29th Round, Hagerstown (A): Last season, Phillabaum posted an 0-6 record in 17 games with the GCL Nationals with an ERA of 4.26. Phillabaum has appeared in 24 games with the Suns this season and has a record of 1-2 with a 5.64 ERA out of the Suns bullpen.
OF Brandon Whiting, 28th Round, Potomac (A): The speedy Boomer Whiting started out last season with Vermont and hit .250 over 62 games. He scored 47 runs and stole 36 bases. This year, Whiting started off at Hagerstown and hit .261 with 36 stolen bases and 40 runs before being promoted to Potomac. In 37 games at Potomac, Whiting lifted his average to .295 and has scored 20 runs and has 13 stolen bases. Overall, Whiting has stole 46 bases and scored 70 runs. Whiting’s speed is a big asset and the fact he is hovering near .300 at Potomac is a positive. Keep an eye on Whiting.
OF Aaron Seuss, 27th Round, Potomac (A): Seuss has some of the best potential of the 2007 class and is on the Nationals radar. That’s why he is at Potomac already. Last season, Seuss was impressive in Vermont, hitting .293 with 4 HRs and 37 RBis. Seuss started out the season in Hagerstown and played in 71 games hitting .304 with 10 homers and 49 RBis. He added in 23 doubles. Since his promotion to Potomac, Seuss is hitting .251 with 4 homers and 21 RBis. Overall for the season, Seuss has hit .284 with 14 homers and 70 RBis. The Nationals are excited about the way Seuss plays and it will be interesting to see if he sees Harrisburg at all before the season winds down.
We’ll pick it up at pick #26 in our next segment.

Damn, Whiting stole 236 bases?
Also might be worth clarifying in the article that Killian was taken again in 2008.
Great read!
Thanks for the typo look up. Got it corrected. Good catch on Killian. Through the last three drafts, the Nats actually have some good catching prospects., Killian joins Derek Norris, Luke Montz, Sean Rooney and Adrian Neito. Will be interesting to see which one develops.
