A new week, another win, an exciting time for Redskins fans.
Zorn and the West Coast … Starting it off just right, the Post brings a good piece on the confidence being derived from the success the Redskins are having in installing the Jim Zorn offense. Fingers are crossed, but so far the Redskins are getting through pre-season without any serious injuries, are making the Zorn west coast offense look effortless, and seeing several players unexpectedly step up and fight for roster consideration. AP also antes up with a Zorn confidence story.
Of course, the DC Examiner already declares Zorn a winner in DC.
The Redskins have found a winner in Zorn. There’s a lot that can prevent Washington from succeeding this season — mostly injuries — but if Zorn leaves the Redskins in the next couple years without success, it’s not because he’s unable to do the job. Clearly, the Redskins lucked out when finding an overlooked assistant ready to become a head coach.
The Defensive Ends … Zorn and Greg Blache are also living the idea of Andre Carter and Jason Taylor as starting defensive ends.
“Then all of a sudden, you flip it. Now, you have to have your quarterback watching where the defensive end lines up as well. If they were trying to go to Jason Taylor, now the [quarterback] might have to change the protection. We have got two good ends. It’s very difficult, whichever side they’re on, [and] I’m not sure that a team is going to be able to play that [way] just because they’re both so effective. I’d say, ‘Okay, Andre Carter and Jason Taylor healthy. What are we going to do about it?’ “
Mix in Trouble? … Anthony Mix has a broken rib and will likely not be in for the NY Jets game this Saturday. Bad news for Mix considering how well Billy McMullen is playing. Meanwhile, rookie WR Devin Thomas and S Laron Landry are expected to see some reps this Saturday.
Rich Tandler follows up an article on t e Mix v. McMullen battle. We put a wide receiver article yesterday, so go read it again. You’ll have all the receiver news you could ever wish for, especially for 5th and 6th slots.
Minor Roster Move … La CanFora from the Post reports that DE Erasmus James has passed his physical and has been activated from the physically unable to perform list. DE Kevin Huntley was the loser from that move.
Offensive Line backup spots heat up … Good battles are shaping up for final roster spots on the offensive line. One guy earning praise is OL Justin Geisinger, and earning it from the right guy, Jim Zorn.
And he had particular praise for Geisinger, who spent most of last season as a guard on Washington’s practice squad. Geisinger is trying to convince Zorn and Bugel to keep him as a ninth or 10th lineman instead of shifting Pete Kendall from left guard if anything should happen to center Casey Rabach.
“For the most part, [Justin] did a great job of communicating in there,” Zorn said. “They all talked. They all worked together and kept their [helmets] on the guys they should have kept them on. It was a great effort by that group.”
Like the article points out, Jason Fabini, Stephon Heyer, and Chd Rhinehart are roster locks. Don’t pencil them in, go ahead and use ink. So guys like Tavares Washington, Geisinger, Andre Crummey, and others are battling for one, possibly two posts. Alot will depend on how many running backs and receivers are carried tot he final 53. But, as for now, Geisinger is making the push to be that final lineman, but, don’t pencil him in just yet. There are two remaining pre-season games.
Brooks v. Frost, Round 2 Begins … The battle for the punting slot remains in flux as Derrick Frost earned praise from Jim Zorn. Up this week, round two begins and Durant Brooks takes the ball.
In addition the Skins will beef up on an otherwise short night at Safety. Vernon Fox and Chris Horton return for the Jet game this Saturday.
