Smoke Signals: Portis to actually play edition

AUTHOR: dcprosportsreport | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet

Smoke SignalsLet’s have a 2-minute silence — TB Clinton Portis is going to make a preseason appearance. Not much of an appearance, mind you. Offensive Coordinator Sherman Smith says Portis might not even be on the field for 10 plays. He will be out there, though, and that’s newsworthy.
The rest of the starters will play 3 series on offense at the most. Coach Jim Zorn may switch up his quarterbacks, though. Jason Campbell will get the start, but 3rd-stringer Colt Brennan, who wowed Redskins fans with a statistically impressive performance against Indianapolis on August 3, may play after Campbell. Zorn wants to see Brennan playing with different players and utilizing different parts of the offense. There is no chance Brennan will be elevated above Todd Collins on the depth chart. Here’s a thought, though. What if Brennan comes in and rips it up again? What if he throws a TD or two, no picks, and completes at least 70% of his passes? I think you’ll hear murmurings in the media that he should have a chance to supplant Collins, who has not played that well so far, as the #2 quarterback behind Campbell. I don’t see the Redskins making that decision, though, considering Collins is not only earning a lot more than Brennan, he’s actually earning more than the starter Campbell.
By the way, if you can’t get enough of Colt Brennan, The Curly R has all the stuff you’d want to know.
Rookie Safety Kareem More has battled injuries during training camp, but he’s impressed the coaches when healthy, so expect to see plenty of him Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. TB Rock Cartwright has injured his ribs, with some cartilage pulling away from the bone. He insists he will play against the Bills, however.
P Derrick Frost has to be feeling some heat from rookie P Durant Brooks, who kicked well against Indianapolis. Frost should get all the punts against Buffalo and will have an opportunity to hold off the promising rookie draft pick. The Redskins did use a draft pick on Brooks, though, so they like him. Frost will really have to kick well to keep his job.

Lee Gibbons at The Redskins Report gives us a rundown of the key position battles during the preseason and odds on who will win what. Interestingly, he gives Anthony Montgomery the nod over Kedric Golston at DT.
John Keim gives us some good info, as always, about the latest doings at Redskins Park.

  • Jason Campbell had a rough day throwing the ball yesterday and earned the wrath of the Zornado! when he scrambled too much and throw incomplete;
  • DE Jason Taylor lined up at left end and repeatedly blew past OT Jon Jansen. Hopefully, we’ll see Taylor doing plenty of that to right tackles wearing another team’s uniform;
  • P Durant Brooks did no directional punting against the Colts last weekend because the coaches just wanted him to punt away — presumably because they wanted to see how strong his leg is in game situations;

Jason Reid of The Washington Post discusses the troubles the Redskins are having with their oft-injured rookie wide receivers.

The Redskins may get a look at the new Bret Favre on August 16 when they play the Jets in New York in Washington’s 3rd preseason game.
