Second Edition: What to Watch For, Redskins 2nd Preseason Game

AUTHOR: | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet |

Well, we did it the first game, we’ll do it the second game and on, and on, and on.  My personal list of what I will be wacthing for in the Redskins/Bills 7PM showdown tomorrow.  I pick out 5 or 6 specific things I will personally zone in on.
1.  Rock Cartwright/Marcus Mason:  Is a battle brewing?  Is Rock safe? Is Mason a lock?  These questions will continue to be answered as preseason advances.  My bet is, Rock is safe, the only question remaining will be, will the Redskins carry 4 running backs.  If so, what position is short changed by 1 spot?  Fact here is, for a 4 depth roster spot, Mason is going to need to prove it on special teams as well, not just rushing.

Spots are limited and Mason will be expected to make contributions elsewhere.  I was a big fan of Mason last preseason.  He ran with great vision and good speed and led the Redskins in rushing for the 4 preseason games.    So is the case in 23008.  Mason rushed for 98 yards and over 5 yards per carry, causing a stir mamong the Internet on Mason’s position ont he Redskins.  This game wil be interesting to watch to see of Mason can continue to carry momentum.  Starter Clinton Portis will play, but don’t expect more than a series or two.  Mason will likely get the bulk of the second half.  Rock will get carries in the fiurst half.  It will be fun to watch.
2.  OL Tavares Washington:  Who?  Why?  Because Todd Wade and Stephon Heyer are out for two weeks, Tavares Washington steps up the line.  Washington has a golden opportunity to display a reason why he can stick.  Possible?  Have you ever heard of Stephon Heyer before last camp?  Many NFL player are made by opportunities and Washington has a chance to show Joe Bugel that he can play a role in DC.  My eye will be on Washington, although he remains an extremely long shot to make the 53 man roster.
3.  P Durant Brooks:  Brooks is trying to unseat Derrick Frost.  Given the fact the Redskins expended a draft pick on Brooks, you gotta believe he has the edge.  Brooks has a terrific first week last week, punting 4 times, averaging 46.0 yards per punt, and putting 2 of the 4 punts inside the 20 yard line.  Will Frost get the ball this week?  If Brooks punts this week, puts up a 46 yard average again, is Frost’s fate sealed.
4.  Kedric Golston/Anthony Montgomery:  Reality here is that both will play often and rotate in and out.  But, is a battle brewing for the starting slot?  I find it hard to believe after the outstanding season Montgomery has last year, that Golston has leaped over Montgomery.  Regardless, I think thge Redskisn are in good hands with these two mid-round gems.  The bigger question for me is the ability of the other starter, Cornelius Griffin, to stay healthy.  But, watch Golstona nd Montgomery to see if either DT gets an upperhand.
5.  The Rookies:  I will continue to focus on Fred Davis, Chris Horton, Chad Rhinehart and Justin Tryon, because I really think these four will not only make the roster, but can have game time impacts.  Dvais led the Redskins least week in receptions, look for more passes his way.  With continued injuries to Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas, Davis could go into the regular season as the Redskins tall receiver threat.  Chad Rhinehart has impressed nearly everyone.  That is one great thing because the Redskins need youth on the Line, specifically in the reserve slot.  Justin Tryon had a so-so week last week.  He got beat on a deep pass and looked bad doing it.  But, he made up for it with two nice hits.  Tryon needs to make an impact on pass defense this week and subsequent weeks.  Chris Horton is going to have a problem exceeding last week’s performance.  But that is OK.  He recorded 2 tackles and an assist with 2 sacks.  Let’s watch Horton continue to progress.
There you go, the top five of many things I will be watching for Saturday night.
