Redskins safeties are banged up — the latest is free agent signee Stuart Schweigert — so CB Shawn Springs is moving over to safety in practice today. It is supposed to be a temporary move, but I know many regard it as a future position for Springs, who is getting long in the tooth for a corneback. I think that makes perfect sense, though with Carlos Rogers injured and Fred Smoot the only other starting-quality cornerback on the roster, Springs is needed even more on the outside. Maybe next year.
Other notes from today’s early practice:
- Erasmus James, Rocky McIntosh, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Anthony Mix, Kareem Moore, LaRon Landry and Chris Wilson are also injured right now;
- Todd Collins looks lost in Jim Zorn’s offense;
- T Stephon Heyer continues to work in LT Chris Samuels’ place in 11 on 11 drills;
- 3rd round pick Chad Rinehart [OG] looks good so far;
- With Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas injured and veteran wideouts not likely to play much in the Hall of Fame game on August 3, this will be the chance for guys like Billy McMullen and Burl Toler to make an impression and get a shot at the team’s final WR spot
Now, watch this video for a good summation of how the Redskins will be preparing this week before the August 3 Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.
