Matt Barnes, the free agent quick forward who played in Golden State the last few years, has signed with the Phoenix Suns for one year at $1.2 million. The Bullets have about $1.5 million under the salary cap so they could have given Barnes that money, but decided to go in another direction. Ivan Carter quotes a Western Conference scout who thinks that is a good idea:
“He had a nice run two years ago with Golden State but you have to be careful about guys like that,” the scout said. “That is a unique system and Barnes fit what Nellie was doing that year with small-ball. They got hot and everyone got excited but you have to look at how a guy like that fits into what you do.”
Did the Bullets pass because they don’t like Barnes on their team or did they pass because they are impressed with Dominic McGuire’s strong Summer League performance [62.5% from the field] and believe he can back up Caron Butler for 10 minutes a game as well or Better than Barnes — and at a discount? An answer to that will depend on whether or not Ernie Grunfeld goes out and gets someone else, not Barnes or McGuire, before the season begins.
