The Bullets led the Portland Trail Blazers in the 4th quarter, but let the game slip away and Portland won 78-73 behind 28 points by Jerryd Bayless, who got to the line at will. Some quick observations…
Andray Blatche: Dominated at times, as you’d expect him to, but also displayed the lack of concentration that we’ve come to expect from him, unfortunately. I liked hustle, but he needs to play smarter.
Dominic McGuire: Great hustle and he’s a real shot-blocker, but his offense still has a long way to go.
Nick Young: Took a lot of bad shots early, but settled down later. Has got a nice shot, but needs to be smarter about shot selection and he should drive to the hoop more frequently. If he plays any defense at all, it has escaped my notice.
Javale McGee: I am more hopeful about Washington’s 1st round pick [18th overall] than I was before the game. For some reason he began the game shooting 3-pointers, but he also made some nice shots and grabbed some rebounds. He needs to get a lot stronger, but that should come with time if he applies himself. He’s got better athleticism than I thought and his length is very impressive. If McGee works on getting stronger, he’s got a real future in this league. He’s better than I thought.
Vladimir Veremeenko: I’m not sure how seriously to take this performance, considering he flew halfway around the world and hardly speaks any English at all. How familiar with the offense could he be? [Same goes for Dee Brown.] Still, VV has clearly got some physical skills. He’s tougher than I thought he’d be and his game looked fairly polished, all things considered. I thought he played pretty well.
Dee Brown: Hard to judge if his previously-woeful shot has improved since he only took 2 shots. He definitely looks quick enough to play this game and he made some nice passes. However, 5 turnovers in 27 minutes is too many.
I don’t know who Frank Elegar is, but he was the only “non-name” player who distinguished himself.
Box Score.
