As you know, I’m skeptical that the Bullets will be able to retain G Roger Mason, though I certainly hope they give it a try. It seems they are. Mike Jones reports that the Bullets are trying to keep Mason in town, though that won’t be easy.
I just talked to Roger Mason Jr.’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, and he said the Wizards are indeed interested in re-signing the former U.Va. standout. Team management and Bartelstein have had some preliminary discussions, but nothing too intense as of yet.
Bartelstein is in the process of setting up visits around the league for Mason. He has one scheduled so far and expects to have another three or four set up by the end of the day.
Again, we’ll see if there is any money left after re-signing Arenas to pay Mason. The team definitely needs a fifth guard and if Mason returns, Washington would be set, with Gilbert, Deshawn, Nick Young, Antonio Daniels and Roger Mason in the backcourt. That’s a strong hand to play with.
Nevertheless, I find it hard to believe Mason can’t get equal or better money elsewhere, with the guarantee of more minutes. I don’t like Mason as a starter in this league, but I definitely see his value as a 3rd guard coming off the bench — something he will not be in Washington next year even if he does re-sign with the team.
