For the first time since Juwan Howard…

The Bullets are poised to offer a player a contract worth at least $100 million. Let’s hope this one goes better than the last one.
After Golden State Warriors PG Baron Davis opted out of a contract that would have paid him $17.8 million this season, the team burned up the phone lines trying to bring Gilbert Arenas, whom they drafted back in 2001, back to California. Eventually, the Warriors offered Arenas more than $100 million over five years to return to Golden State. The Sacramento Kings also apparently told Gilbert that they would offer him the maximum and were prepared to trade their entire team if that’s what it took to bring him to the Kings.
Gilbert met with GM Ernie Grunfeld last night, at which time Grunfeld offered Gil a max contract of $124 million over the next 6 years. However, Grunfeld also warned Gilbert that the contract would seriously hamper any future efforts to acquire free agents.

According to a source close to Arenas, the three-time all star is mulling the offers but is leaning towards staying with the Wizards and is willing to take less than the maximum if it will help Grunfeld make other moves he needs to make this summer.

A quick survey of the roster confirms that the Bullets could use another guard, even after Gil is re-signed. Right now, the back court is Gil [if re-signed], Deshawn Stevenson, Antonio Daniels, and Nick Young. Obviously, the problem would be solved if Roger Mason is brought back, but I continue to regard that as a long shot, to be devoutly wished-for, but not counted-on. If Gil and Antawn can leave a few dollars on the table for a veteran backup guard, the Bullets back court situation would be a bit more secure.
Gil will speak on the phone with Bullets owner Abe Pollin when Gil’s plane lands in China later today. Hopefully, the details will be thrashed out at that point and a deal done.
