The Washington Capitals have signed Goalie Jose Theodore to a two year deal.

Theodore was 28-21 last season with the Colorado Avalanche posting a 2.44 GAA. The Theodore signing means that Cristobal Huet will not return to Washington. Washington was clearly looking for a deal under 4 years and for certain amount of money. With two major prospects in the wings, Simeon Varlamov and Michal Nuevirth, the Capitals clearly did not want to block the paths to the Net for too long of a term.

Caps Blue Line:
As for the on-the-ice product, Theodore is a gamble and has been nothing if not inconsistent. If playing with a young, talented team revitalizes him, this could be a good signing for the Capitals. The important thing for Capitals fans will be to reserve judgment until the terms of whatever contract Huet signs are announced.
We agree. The critical part here is why. What kind of figures was Huet looking for and what kind of figures is Huet going to get when he inks a deal elsewhere. Until those numbers come in, I am not really ready to condemn or cheer this move.
UPDATE: Chicago Blackhawks ink Cristobal Huet to a 4 year deal, for reportedly 5.6 million per year.
Rumors are swirling that Huet asked the Capitals for a 3 year $15 million deal, and the Caps in turn offered that to him. At that point, Huet decided he wanted to test the market, likely causing some hard feelings. From the sounds of things, this was more of a Huet issue than a GMGM issue. Sounds as if Huet was playing Washington to boost the price.
UPDATE: That being said, and if all those rumors turn out to be true, then this deal with Theodore isn’t so bad. We likely would not have landed Huet unless we really over paid for him, plus, I am not sure the best thing for the capitals future, given Nuevirth and Varlamov, was a 4 year deal. If Theodre plays as well as he did last season, the Caps should be fine in goal. Hopefully he doe snot revert to his play of 2005-2006.
