According to Mike Jones of The Washington Times, Bullets owner Abe Pollin spoke to Gilbert Arenas during a Toronto layover on Gil’s flight to China today.
Pollin’s line to Arenas: “You’re my guy, and I won’t let you leave no matter what.”
Well, there you go. Jones writes that “Arenas is close to accepting a six-year offer from the Washington Wizards that could be worth as much as $127 million.”
The Golden State Warriors also offered Gilbert Arenas a max deal, according to a source. The Warriors offered Arenas five years for $101 million. The Wizards, because Arenas was under contract with them, are permitted to offer six years while other teams can offer only five. Although the Wizards’ offer is for an extra year and $26 million, the source said that isn’t a deciding factor for Arenas. The Wizards’ offer carried more weight with Arenas because the guard has emerged as a star in the NBA during his time in the District.
It’s hard to see the Bullets having any spare change left if Gil gets $127 over 6 years, even if Antawn Jamison’s contract is front-loaded to count less than $10 million against the cap this year. By the way, the team has a 2.30 PM press conference scheduled today to formally announce the Jamison re-signing.
