What’s up with the Washington Nationals?
Losers of 8 of their last 9 on Thursday, the Nationals offense woke up over the weekend scoring 18 runs, compiling 35 hits, and completing a three game weekend sweep of the Seattle Mariners in Seattle. How are they doing it?
First, the Nats players we have been critical of, the new acquisitions, are awaking offensively, mainly Lastings Milledge and Elijah Dukes. Over the weekend, Milledge had a hit in each game, was 6 for 14, scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Dulkes had a hit in each game, 4 for 11 and scored 3 runs. Milledge batting average was raised to .258 and Dukes is up to .235.
But, it goes beyond just those guys. The young are getting it done, mainly C Jesus Flores. Flores was a combined 4 for 13 7 RBis over the weekend, including a game winning homer on Saturday. Kory Casto hit his first major league homer today to life the Nationals to the sweep. Tyler Clippard pitched 6 strong innings of 2 run ball on Saturday, before being sent to Columbus to make room for Paul Lo Duca, coming off the DL. The young are getting to done. Let’s just hope Lo Duca stays were he belongs, in the bench. Flores is among the hottest players on the Nationals both offensively and defensively. Flores is now hitting .311 and has 9 runs driven in in the last 10 games.
Today the nationals got 6 quality innings out of Tim Redding, although Redding would depart without a decision. In 6 innings, Redding gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, with 5 hits. Jesus Colome got the win and Joel Hanrahan helped close it out.
The Nats are off Monday and then begin a three game series in Minnesota.

I’m still baffled by the Lo Duca signing when Flores showed so much promise last year.
Is there any potential to trade him?
Must we keep our fingers crossed that the starting catcher on a playoff contender gets hurt?
Teams might want Lo Duca as a backup anyway….but the catch is that the Nats might have to play him as an audition for other teams.

I can’t see the Nats getting much, if anything, for Lo Duca.
