DC Sports Wrap (6/9)

AUTHOR: | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 1 Comment |

Is this boring or what?  No Wizards, no Caps, no Redskins, and the Nationals simply look sick.  What a dull time for Washington DC pro sports.  We’ll do our best to warp news, scrape news, dig news, whatever we have to do.
First off, was the NHL mistake an accurate prediction?  In case you missed this story over the weekend, the official online NHL.com store had on sale for a few hours, by accident, blue Alexander Ovechkin Hart Trophy t-shirts.  The NHL dismisses it by saying that vendors print up several so they are ready to sell immediately upon award designation.  Buy that argument?  Nope, we don’t either, the NHL simply gave it away.  Ovie is in the running with Calgary’s Jerome Ignilia and Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin.  Ignilia seems to endorse Ovechkin.

Iginla certainly hasn’t cleared a place in his trophy case for the Hart.   “If Washington makes the playoffs,” the Calgary captain said late in the regular season, “I think it’s a no-brainer. With the season Ovechkin’s had? If they make it, yeah, he’d definitely have my vote. He’s had an amazing year.”

The award ceremony is Thursday in Toronto.
The Caps got two others up for awards.  Nicklas Backstrom is in the running for the Calder Trophy, the top rookie prize.  I suspect he will finish second to Chicago’s Patrick Kane.  Caps bench boss Bruce Boudreau is in the runnig for the Adams, the Coach of the Year.  Boudreau took over the Capitals at Thanksgiving, with the Capitals sitting in last overall in the NHL.  The team rallied and eventually won 7 straight and 11 of their last 12 to not onyl clinch a playoff berth, but win an improbable Southeast Division crown.  It was the first time any NHL team sat in Last at All Star Break and went on to clinch a playoff berth.
Not much going on in Washington Bullets world right now as the Bullets management are solely focused on the coming NBA draft.  We”ll have mock draft database updates coming later this morning.
As always, feel free to post comments and get into discussion right here at DCPSR.

Well, I personally am concerned with some of the bats Bowden obtained. Wily Mo Pena, Elijah Dukes, and Lastings Milledge were suppose to provide offensive spark and they haven't. Milledge I give the benefit of the doubt,t he kid is young and still developing.
I wouldn't mind seeing guys like Colin Balestar getting a rotation spot along with Garrett Mock. I would love to see Roger Bernadina get a shot for playing time. He is ready. I think the more they struggle, the more youth has to play a role. Look at the progress we have gotten with Jesus Flores.
