The Washington Nationals had a much needed break last night as they finished up a west coast trip and find themselves on the verge of falling double digit games behind.  Injuries are mounting which could provide youthful opportunities in DC.
Casto Recalled — To replace Zimmerman, the Nationals recalled Kory Casto from Columbus (AAA). In 89 at bats in Columbus, the Nationals are finally liking what they see in Casto.  Casto is hitting .315 with 4 doubles, 3 homers and 16 RBIs.
Columbus (AAA) gave up 2 runs in the first inning last night, but shutout Buffalo from there on, and winning 5-2.  Larry Broadway was 3 for 4 with a double and knocked in 2 runs.  Broadway has driven in 5 runs in the last 4 games.  Peter Orr, fresh off the DL, and Kory Casto each drove in a run. On the mound, Garrett Mock continues to get the job done, tossing 5.2 innings, yielding those 2 first inning runs and striking out 4.  Mock improved to 4-2 and lowered his ERA to 3.06.  Chris Schroder and Chris Booker shutdown Buffalo the rest of the way.  Clippers have won 3 of their last 4.
Record:  32-27, 4 games back
Transactions:  Promoted Kory Casto to Washington
Harrisburg (AA) enjoyed an evening off last night.  They will begin a series at Commerce Bank Park in Harrisburg against Binghamton.
Record: 33-22, First Place
Transactions: None
After an explosive series with Lynchburg, it got real calm last night as the Potomac Nats (A) shutout Lynchburg 1-0 behind the arm of Adrian Alaniz.  Alaniz is quickly gaining attention in Washington.  The 2007 draft pick threw 6.1 shutout innings striking out 5 to earn his 8th win, he improves to 8-0 with an ERA of 2.45.  Alaniz has now won 6 straight starts and is 8-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his last 10 outings.  Harrisburg should be calling. Francisco Placencia was 2 for 3 with a double and OF Dee Brown knocked in the only Nat run.
Record: 34-22, First Place
Transactions: SP Jeff Mandel was promoted from Hagerstown to Potomac.  Luis Atilano was demoted to Hagerstown.
Hagerstown Suns (Low A) suffered their season worst 6th straight loss last night, falling 8-7 to Lakewood.  After a promising start to the season, Cole Kimball has been pounded recently, and nothing was different for him last night.  Kimball got racked for 7 runs on 3.2 innings.  Offensively, Stephen King’s bat has not cooled down as he had a 3 for 4 night driving in 2 runs and lifting his average to .355.  Tim Pahuta and Sean Rooney each had 2 hits and Rooney added 2 RBis.
Record: 27-29, 6.5 games back
