NBA Draft News Update for May 30, 2008

Derrick RoseJoey Dorsey, Memphis teammates of PG Derrick Rose, says he knows where Rose is going on draft night and it ain’t to Chicago.

“Chicago’s got a lot of pressure on them because Derrick’s from Chicago,” Dorsey said. “But they’re going to take [Michael] Beasley. I’ve got the inside. They’re going to get Beasley.”

Rose himself isn’t buying it.

“Joey is going to be Joey,” Rose said. “I was just asking him what was he thinking when he said that? He was just fooling around. If anybody knows, it wouldn’t be Joey.”

The consensus so far is that Ty Lawson will be a first round pick, though probably not a high one, and he won’t return for another season in Chapel Hill. I think he’d be wise to do that. The Bullets have already had Lawson in for a look. Here’s a video of Lawson doing his thing.

Apparently, some NBA personnel men are down on Brook Lopez, predicted to be a top 5 pick in most mock drafts. DC Pro Sports Report has him going 3rd to the Timberwolves.]

“This is a process,” one NBA GM said. “We are gathering information, going back to the tape and looking at things, and we’re just getting a better feel for players. I know a lot of guys on our staff, me included, are worried about Brook. In fact, I’d say half our guys think his brother [Robin Lopez] will be a better NBA player. Workouts will really be important for him. I think we have a lot of questions about him right now.”

As we all know, a good NCAA tourney — and especially a good Final 4 — can do wonders for a player’s draft position. The latest beneficiary is Kansas PG Mario Chalmers, who wasn’t even regarded as a first round pick by many GMs a year ago. Now, some are saying he’ll go in the lottery.

“The point guard position continues to increase in importance,” one GM said. “For a team that really needs a leader, I think Chalmers is a really interesting prospect. He’s not a spectacular athlete or passer, but he’s fearless and he knows how to win. I’d love to have a guy like that on my team.”

Derrick Rose calls Michael Beasley the best player in the draft. Michael Beasley isn’t sure he agrees.
As soon as teams settle on how good a player is, they immediately begin to second-guess themselves and dream up reasons not to take him.

Beasley’s height has become his latest manufactured pitfall.

Not officially measured until Friday, Beasley himself had become confused.

”I didn’t know there was a height requirement [for the NBA],” the ambidextrous comedian said. “I thought I was 6-9. I heard 6-7. In college, I was 6-10. I might have grown an inch maybe, I don’t know.”

Any team worried about Michael Beasley’s height deserves to get its ass kicked on draft night.
Many college hoop players declaring for the draft will never make it in The Show, but that doesn’t stop even the longshots from giving it their best shot. “I’m trying to make my own reality right now,” says one.
OJ Mayo, the USC super-guard picked by many to go in the top 3 on draft night, is trying to focus on impressing the pro scouts rather than on the recruiting violation rumors and allegations that continue to swirl around him. Because of his immense talent, Mayo is getting a long look from the pros and it is unlikely these allegations will have much of an impact on what happens in the draft.
Players think they know where they are going. Brook Lopez hasn’t bothered to set up an appointment to work out for Miami and PG Jerryd Bayless [DC Pro Sports Report has Bayless going at 4 to the Sonics] thinks there is no point working out for Miami, since they won’t be taking him in the draft. But what if they trade out of the 2nd pick, Jerryd?
Texas Point Guard DJ Augustin thinks he’s ready to run an NBA team from the point. DC Pro Sports Report has him going to the Pacers.
Future lottery picks like Brook Lopez, Jerryd Bayless and Augustin will be happy to play for the Sonics, but Eric Gordon wants to play in Oklahoma City instead of Seattle. Eric, have you ever been to Seattle? It’s a great city and you’re freaking nuts.
