The Washington Nationals offense only managed three hits all night. 3 hits! But, out of the three hits, the Nationals posted 5 runs.
The first run came in the fifth inning, a solo shot from Wily Mo Pena, his first homer of the season. The 6th inning proved big for the Nats. After Felipe Lopez and Christian Guzman got on base, Ryan Zimmerman doubled, scoring Lopez to make it 2-1, the game winning RBI. Lastings Milledge got an RBI on a ground out that scored Guzman. Then, the young cacher Jesus Flores delivered a two run double that scored Zimmerman and Aaron Boone to make it 5-1. Flores was 1 for 3 and is hitting .356.
Brian Sanches, in his major league debut after being called up today from the Columbus Clippers, pitched an impressive 6th inning, giving up 1 hit, but whiffing a huge three batters. Sanches is 1-0. Saul Rivera, Luis Ayala, and Jon Rauch all pitched perfect innings to round out the Nationals win.
John Lannan faces off against Seth McClung tomorrow night in the second game of a four game series.

Columbus Clippers (AAA) dropped a 3-2 decision to Buffalo tonight. Despite a 6 inning shutout performance by Garrett Mock, in which he struck out 5, Bobby Brownlie, promoted form Harrisburg (AA), got racked for 3 runs in 2 innings of relief for the loss. Brownlie was 5-0 in Harrisburg with an ERA under 2.00, is now 1-1 in Columbus with an ERA of 6.35. Kory Casto was 2 for 3, hit his 2nd homer, drove in a run and scored twice.
Harrisburg (AA) dropped Connecticut 5-2 tonight. Corey Van Allen pitched 6 strong innings, giving up 2 runs and striking out 6, but walked away without a decision. Van Allen now has an ERA of 2.16 since his promotion to Harrisburg. Zechery Zincola recorded his 5th save pitching a shutout 9th inning. Roger Bernadina was 2 for 5 and knocked in 2 runs. Bernadina is hitting .323. Luke Montz, Ofilio Castro, Michael Danile, and Ian Desmond each had two hits. Castro and Daniel each had an RBI.
Potomac National (A) shutout Salem 1-0 tonight. Nationals only run came on Matt Rogelstad’s 6th homer of the year. Guiseppe Norrito pitched 6 scoreless innings, striking out 5, to pick up his second win. He is 2-0 with an ERA of 1.69. Yunior Novoa pitched 1 scoreless inning of relief to earn save number 4. His ERA fell to 1.38.
