The Washington Nationals did a little bit of roster shuffling today. The moves were to solidify the bullpen and provide another OF spot.
OF Austin Kearns was placed on the 15 day DL and will likely miss three weeks. Called up to take his roster place is Ryan Langerhans. Langerhans has helped lead the Clipper offense batting .306, scoring 27 runs, hitting 10 doubles and leads the team with 24 RBIs. There are some out there that may not like this move, but it is well deserved. Langerhans has had a solid season thus far for Columbus.
The Nationals also optioned RP Chris Schroeder and Matt Chico to Columbus. Chico has struggled all season after being inked into the starting rotation. His ERA is over 6.00 and a dismal record of 0-6 and was removed to the bullpen. On Wednesday, Chico got a shot back in the rotation and had a woeful performance, getting battered for 7 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings, as the Nats fell to the Phillies 12-2. Schroeder gave up 3 hits and 2 runs in 1 inning.
To replace Chico and Shroeder, the National recalled the Clipper’s two most impressive relievers, Charles Manning and Brian Sanches. Manning has appeared in 19 games is 0-0 with 6 saves and an impressive 1.95 ERA. Manning has given up 6 runs in 27 innings of relief work and recording 34 strikeouts. Sanches is the save leader for the Clippers appearing in 14 games is 0-0 with 7 saves. He has posted an incredible ERA of 0.98. Sanches has yielded just 2 runs in 18 innings and struck out 26. The moves will immediately bolster the Nationals struggling bullpen.
