Who to take with the first pick in the draft is not a new quandary for Chicago pro hoops teams. First the WNBA Chicago Sky and now the NBA Chicago Bulls.
The Orlando Sun-Sentinel looks at the chess match now beginning between John Paxson of the Bulls and Pat Riley of the Heat. Riley wants Derrick Rose. Maybe Paxson does, too. Or maybe he wants Beasley and figures he can get Riley to give him something for Rose while the Bulls still get the big man they want.
If it is Beasley to the Heat, at least one companion move would have to follow, involving either Udonis Haslem or Shawn Marion. A team with only Marcus Banks under contract at point guard and Mark Blount under contract at center can’t afford to have three of its best players aligned at forward. The move could be as simple as Marion to the Bulls for a suddenly available Kirk Hinrich, or perhaps Haslem to the defensively challenged Grizzlies for a piece of Memphis’ abundance at point guard (Mike Conley Jr., Kyle Lowry, Javaris Crittenton).
Sam Smith lays out a myriad of trade options for the Bulls, the Pacers, the Heat and most anyone else in or near the lottery. It’s a fascinating read, even if none of it ever happens.
Will accusations that OJ Mayo was involved in recruiting violations hurt him in the draft?
Could an Australian with a 7′5″ wingspan sneak into the first round of the draft?
Chad Ford updates us on Joe Alexander, a 21-year-old small forward from the University of West Virginia. He wasn’t even on most teams’ radar screens a few months ago and now he’s a serious lottery consideration. [DC Pro Sports Report has Alexander going 14th, the last pick in the lottery, to the Golden State Warriors.] Alexander was a teenager playing hoops in China, where his father worked, until returning to the United States and taking up the game again in Maryland. Apparently, Alexander became famous for obsessively dribbling a basketball for hours at a time.
