Jason Bergmann struggled early in the season, struggled bad enough to be optioned to Columbus (AAA). But after Matt Chico followed suit in struggling and Mike O’Connor getting blasted in his only start, the Nationals turned a few days ago back to Jason Bergmann for once and for all to lock up the fifth starter role. He is off to a good start.

Bergmann threw 7 shutout innings, scattering just 3 hits and striking out 9 to help lead the Washington Nationals to a 1-0 win and a 3 of 4 series win versus the NL East rivals.
The Nationals offense did not provide much support, managing only 4 hits themselves, but it was enough because of the outstanding effort by Bergmann and the bullpen. Aaron Boone, playing for an injured Nick Johnson, was 2 for 4 and is now hitting an impressive .327. Felipe Lopez knocked int he winning and only run of the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Jesus Flores. Flores finished the game 1 for 2 with 2 walks and a run scored. he is hitting .360.
Luis Ayala pitched a scoreless 8th inning as he continues his pursuit of breaking out of a slump from the pen. Jon Rauch closed out the Mets in the 9th inning to record his 9th save of the year.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jason Bergmann, 7 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits, 9 strikeouts
Next Up: Tomorrow night the beginning of a three game Battle of the Beltway Series with Baltimore
