The Washington Capitals have three nominated for the three of the major NHL Awards.
Alexander Ovechkin has been nominated for the coveted NHL Hart Award, the NHL MVP of the Year. Ovechkin should easily win given the fact he led the NHL in goals with 65 and total points with 112. The closer player to Ovechkin in goals was Ilya Kovulchuk with 52 and Evgeni Malkin placed second in overall points with 106. Matter of fact, get over to TSN and vote for Ovie!
Caps head coach Bruce Boudreau has been named one of three finalists for the NHL Adams Award, NHL Coach of the Year. Boudreau joins Detroit head coach Mike Babcock and the Habs head coach Guy Carbonneau. Boudreau stands a great shot considering what he walked into right after Thanksgiving. He took over a Capitals team that stood at 6-14-1 and did something no other coach or NHL team has ever done, he led the Capitals from dead last at the All Star Break, tot he NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs as well as winning the Southeast Division crown. Boudreau led the Capitals to a 37-17-7 record and 7 straight season ending wins to clinch the Southeast.
Capitals 2006 first rounder Nicklas Backstrom has been nominated for the Calder Trophy, the NHL Rookie of the Year award. Backstrom finished second in rookie scoring with69 points, including an impressive 55 assist. Backstrom also rallied after a poor two game start in the NHL playoffs to lead the Capitals overall with 4 playoff goals.
