Boudreau Staying Awhile, Kolzig Likely Not

Per Tarik, Caps Head Coach Bruce Boudreau recently signed a multi-year deal that will have him behind the bench in DC for a number of years. Tarik wrote a snippet in his blog, so further details as far how long the deals was. Good to know though.
Personally, I think Boudreau should receive serious consideration for NHL Coach of the Year. Boudreau did something miraculous this season. He took the Capitals from last place to the playoffs, something no other NHL team has ever done. Look at the difference in things like, the way Alex played under Boudreau, the development of Nicklas Backstrom since Boudreau took over, the effectiveness of both special teams units, the energy and enthusiasm and renewed spirit this team had under Boudreau, the impressive 40 same game streak without a back to back loss, and overall, the revitalization Boudreau helped deliver to Washington DC for their Capitals. It’s nice to know that come September, Bruce is unequivicolly the man in charge.
Goodbye Olie … Meanwhile, Tarik also reports that longtime Caps Goalie Olaf Kolzig arrived at Kettler Ice Complex and cleaned everything out before most players even arrived and never appeared for a mandatory team meeting. Not real surprising.
Few thoughts.. first let’s give it up for the greatness Olie brought to us Caps fans for 18 years. Second, doesn’t it feel like we just lost a chunk of Capitals soul? He was our net minder, he was our Darrell Green, and he was our Cal Ripken. Yeah, the time comes to change course, turn the page and start a new chapter, but it doesn’t make it any easier knowing that.
None of us will ever forget the efforts, energy, and great goal tending Kolzig brought night after night, season after season. Let’s not also ever forget the valuable asset Kolzig was to the Washington community as a whole. Olie did not come here, take his money, and just play hockey. He became an important fixture in the DC community and perhaps that above all, makes this even sadder. Olie was more than a Capital goalie.
Goodbye Olie. You really did deserve a final Olie! Olie! Olie! chant.
Eminger returning? ... Seems like the fact that Caps went 17-7 with Eminger in the game, the fact he meshed real well with Jon Erskine, the fact he actually played better each game he played, well, the efforts could allow Eminger to return to DC next year, something none of us would have even thought about one short month ago.

General Manager George McPhee said he plans to extend a qualifying offer to defenseman Steve Eminger, despite the fact that Eminger played so sparingly. Eminger said he would he open to returning, but would obviously like more playing time.

Pothier … As we addressed earlier this week past weekend, Brian Pothier’s career may be near an end.

McPhee acknowledged that defenseman Brian Pothier’s career could be in jeopardy. Pothier has been out since January with a concussion.
