The Washington Bullets crushed the Chicago Bulls 99-87 at the United Center tonight to improve to 40-37 and reclaim the 5th spot in the Eastern Conference. Brendan Haywood scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bullets, who also got 18 points and 8 rebounds from Caron Butler and 14 points off the bench from Roger Mason. Antawn Jamison missed his 2nd straight game with a sprained shoulder and Gilbert Arenas was held out of the 2nd game in 2 nights as a precaution.
“The training staff looked at him,” said assistant coach Mike O’Koren, who addressed reporters before the game instead of ailing coach Eddie Jordan. “They’re going to be real, real delicate with Gilbert. He’s coming back from injury. He looked fine. He obviously is in great shape, great condition for being out that long. It’s precautionary.”
The Philadelphia 76ers, who lost to the Atlanta Hawks, fell to 6th in the conference and the Toronto Raptors, who lost to the lowly NJ Nets, are in the 7th place, 2 full games behind the Bullets. Atlanta is one game behind Washington.
The Bullets and Bulls played each other almost even in quarters 1, 2, and 4, but the Bullets dominated the 3rd quarter 34-21. Washington also completely dominated the game on the glass, outrebounding the Bulls 53-28 for the game. Haywood and Andray Blatche both led the Bullets with 10 boards apiece. Darius Songaila was excellent, scoring 14 points on 7-11 shooting and pulled down 8 rebounds. He was +21 for the game, second only to Antonio Daniels, who was an amazing +26 for the game.
Expect Gilbert to practice on Monday and Tuesday. Washington does not play again until Wednesday, when they face off against the Boston Celtics, who lead the NBA with 61 wins.
