The Washington Capitals took a big leap on the path of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a huge 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Verizon Center rocked and rolled tonight, the first time in 5 years, meaningful games this later took grip of Washington hockey.

The game did not start out well for the Caps. Just 39 seconds into the game Flipu Kuba put the Lightning up 1-0. Nearly 12 minutes later, Alexander Ovechkin would respond off a rebound to score his 64th goal of the year and knot the game up at 1-1. Ovechkin also broke the NHL record for gaols scored by a left wing. Congrats to you Alex! Caps did have a goal waived off by Brooks Laich for incidental contact, a highly questionable call by some poor refereeing tonight. The Caps unbelievably out shot the Lightning by a whopping 20-5 in the first period.
The second period ended with no goals and was pretty laid back compared to the first period and a wild third period. There were only 15 total shots, Caps out shot Tampa 9-6.
In the third period, Ovechkin sent a nasty slap shot above the shoulder of Tampa goalie Karri Ramo that hit the top the net and in the goal for his 65th goal of the season. It was Ovie’s NHL leading 22nd power play goal of the season. Late rin the third, Boyd Gordon took a rebound from a shot by Matt Bradley and dinked it past Ramo to seal Tampa’s fate and ptu the Capitals up 4-1 with under 4 minutes to go. Tom Poti would add his second goal of the year on an empty net, length of ice goal to finish the game off at 4-1. Caps finished the third period, out shooting Tampa again 11-8. Overall, the Capitals out shot Tampa 40-19
Overall, Cristobal Huet won his 8th straight game as the Caps net minder, stopping 18 of 19 shots. Huet continues his pure dominance since being traded from Montreal to Washington. This blogger has no doubt, without the deadline trade of Huet, caps are not sitting where they are right now, period. He has been absolutely stellar in goal, suffocating around the net, and has made some of the most incredible saves we have seen in a ling time in DC.
