Who says pitching is the big question mark for Washington in 2008?
Ryan Zimmerman hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the 6th inning, and it turns out, that is all they would need. The Washington Nationals pitchers threw a 1 hitter to blank Philadelphia.
SP Tim Redding (1-0) was impressive, giving up only 1 hit and 3 walks, on zero runs in 7 innings of work before he gave way to Luis Ayala. After giving up his third walk in the 7th inning, Nats Manager Manny Acta turned to Luis Ayala who shut down the Phillies 7th inning. Ayala gave up no hits and no runs in one inning. It was hold number 2 for Ayala. With Chad Cordero still sidelined from shoulder tendonitis, Jon Rauch came in and earned his first save of the year, sitting the Phils down in order.
In all three games thus far, Nationals starters have made it through five innings. Impressive starting pitching is fueling the Nationals 3-0 start, an aspect of the team that fielded the biggest questions and concerns coming out of spring training. Nats starters have now tossed 17.1 innings of work and yielded 4 runs.
Offensively, the Nationals were pretty quiet, managing only 6 hits, 2 coming from Zimmy and 2 from Christian Guzman.
