Around the Beltway: Nats win, Bullets lose, Caps roll

Around the Beltway in SportsThe Nationals won their first game in their new park 3-2 over the Atlanta Braves on a Ryan Zimmerman walk-off home run. The Nats are now 1-0 and atop the NL East. Tremble in fear, Braves, Mets, and Phillies!
A tough OT loss for the Bullets last night in Los Angeles. Nick Young scored a career-high 27 points and the team went to him in the last few possessions for the win, but couldn’t get it done. Young attacked the basket, nailed 3-pointers, took his man off the dribble…he did it all. It was a thoroughly impressive offensive game for the rookie, the best of his young career. Caron Butler scored a triple-double and Antawn Jamison had yet another double-double. Deshawn Stevenson nailed 8 3-pointers, the most in any game of his entire career. Still, it wasn’t enough and Washington falls to 38-35. Cleveland won, but Toronto and Philadelphia lost so Washington retains a 1-game lead over the Raptors for the 5th playoff spot in the East.
Gilbert Arenas says he would take less money in order to keep Antawn Jamison in a Washington uniform. Jamison is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and Arenas is expected to be one, as well, after he opts out of the final year of his contract.

How much less in Arenas willing to take?
“That depends on what Antawn wants,” Arenas said with a chuckle. “We’ve been together six out of my seven years so we have an understanding. We know what’s in jeopardy so, you know, I told him whatever he wants, give it to him and I’ll take the pay cut. I know what he does. He’s a part of my success and I’m a part of his success so we have this one-two combination that works in this league. We know we make each other better. Someone has to sacrifice. This might be one of his last contracts so I’ll sacrifice and hopefully I’ll get another at the end of the day and if I don’t, I know I did the right thing.”

Now, is this promise a PR stunt by Gil or is he serious? If he is serious, it’s obviously an important story. My hunch has always been that Arenas and Jamison would essentially swap contract, with Gilbert eventually earning about $16 million per year and Jamison coming down to about $10-11 million per year. Seems fair to me. We’ll see what happens.
The Bullets play tonight against the Jazz in Utah, a game in which the home team should be heavily favored. The Jazz are a very good team, they’re playing at home, and the Bullets are coming off a game last night that went into overtime. I see this as a loss unless the Jazz come out completely flat. [Get it? Jazz? Flat? Never mind.]
The Washington Capitals have now won 19 road games this season, their most since the 1993-94 season, when they won 21 games on the road. The Caps are at home against Carolina tomorrow, yet another chance to sneak into that final playoff spot.
